Hello! I am new to this website as well as new to cavaliers. I have a 15 week old tri male. We are enjoying him and has kept us on our toes. He is very active but has us stumped. About 2 weeks ago he started to lose his fur under his front legs then moved to his belly and now working up his sides. I took him in for his vet check and the vet is not really sure why he is doing this. The vet does not want to run any tests in case this is a thing that cavaliers do. She checked with a local breeder and they did not know of anything. I have been reading on your website about fur loss. Can he be losing his puppy coat and can it look as if he has no hair at all?

kayla is loosing hair around her belly and chest...... the vet said if there is no redness or irritation then there was no need to bring her in.... I think it is due to the heat.....
she did not loose too much but it thinned out i check her everyday to make sure that there is no redness i have actually been putting baby poweder and she has stopped itching so much

Hi Boomer and welcome,
I think I would demand some skin tests at least. Cavaliers can get Cheyletiella (walking dandruff) that doesn't always cause itching.
If it were me, I'd take the pup in and ask the vet for a skin scrape (doesn't hurt, they just take a few cells and look at them under a microscope).
If the skin is red or inflamed and the scrape shows nothing then I think I'd want blood screens done.
If the skin looks normal and 'puppy pink' then contact the breeder and ask him/her if it's happened to any of the other pups - could just be shedding of the puppy coat but tbh, I've never known it to be really prolific and it does usually grow back as it's shedding.

I have not experienced that problem with my 3 cavs. I would go for the skin tests and get a diagnosis before it spreads any further. :flwr:

If the vet is stumped and the hair loss is significant, I'd talk again with your vet and ask for a referral to a specialist who would know skin conditions in dogs. There are some skin conditions accompanied by hair loss. If the loss is enough for the vet to be concerned, I'd want that checked. It certainly sounds unusual.
