Girl Or Boy? Your opinions please...

Having waited patiently for my puppy after searching and a couple of failed matings, finally I had the call I was hoping for from my breeder. My puppy was born on Friday...yay! The only problem being I had wanted a girl but the mum had 3 boys and 1 girl and the breeder might want to keep the girl. She said she would decide in 8 weeks. So I have first refusal on the girl but I can have my choice of the boys. There's a possibility she might keep a boy, I guess depending on looks. It's kind of thrown me. I had a girls name picked out and everything. I know by eight weeks I would have become attached to the boy as I am allowed to see him every week from 10 days old. I've even chosen the name Dylan! I don't know how I would feel if I was offered the girl at that point. I would appreciate your opinions on any differences, advantages/disadvantages in nature or habbits between girls and boys. Thank you x

I chose a boy because of girls monthly's :yuk:
and was told that girls can be quite hormonal/stroppy (don't know how true it is)?, I have enough of that with my 12 yr old daughter

I have the most sweeties Girl,,,,,, and my mother and sister inlaw has girls too... I do not want to make your more confused but having a girls is also great and the 6 monthly (not monthy) is not really a prob...

I have always had males cavaliers the only dog who was female Penny was no trouble only once every 6 mouth are so when she was in season about nomal for most dogs I can say that male or female that they are lovely little dogs Aileen

I agree with Sara, my boys are definitely in love with me

Unless you were planning on breeding which you're obviously not, I don't really think it matters too much. They are such loving little dogs and both sexes are as wonderful and loving as each other :D

From my experience with Golden Retrievers ( girls can be wayward and stubborn)- I chose a boy - don't know if its breed specific but I think boys are more loyal and tend to want to please their mum's more (thus easier to train) - which is why I am going for another boy :)

I adore having two boys. If you have bonded with the little boy, tell your breeder you want to stick with the boy! :)

Girls actually only have twice yearlies or so not monthlies, but of course they last 4 weeks each time :yikes:  -- spaying solves the issue and is highly advisable for health reasons for females that are not part of a structured breeding programme with a recognised breeder/mentor. :) Lower cancer risk (they have a 25% chance of cancer otherwise on average) and removes the roisk of pyometra, which is usually lethal.

Females can be stroppy even when spayed, usually only with other females, spayed or not. Lily is this way. From that point of view, I much prefer the easy going nature of my boys!

It is all partly up to the individual dog's personality too but I have seen far more problems between female dogs of any breed or mix than between males, especially neutered males. Spaying and neutering considerably lowers the incidence of problems.

I love my boys - and my boys love me (especially when I was kissing Woody and something popped out :yikes the other day). We also have Molly down the road and there is really no difference to attitudes, I think if female or male it doesn't matter.

Ditto :D :D :D :D

I have two males and just love them both, they just adore us and are extremely loving.

I Ditto what Sara said, have always heard that and I truly believe it is true my breeder also told me the same thing.

Go get that little boy. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
You will not regret it.

I have one boy and 4 girl cavaliers. My girls do not fight with each other. They all have their spats but nothing horrible. They each have their own wonderful individual personality. They all love me and I love each one of them for who they are....whether boy or girl does not enter into that decision. I say pick the pup that tugs at your heart and forget the color or the sex. You will know when you see them which one is yours...if not right away then soon. They are all so loveable!!!

Always had the girlies...up to four living together..never a problem. Always had them spayed after the first season never any moodiness etc.

It's always been "me and my girls!" not choosen by choice it's just the way it's happened. Would love a little boy equally the same... :D

Wow Cavalier Talk gets me quick answers, it's great. Thank you for your replies. I feel happier now. I'm after the company and affection of a real soppy dog and now think a boy is best for me. "Dylan" it is then...I'm so excited, I'm sure you can imagine. Keep your comments coming please. Thank you cl*p

I don't mean at all to say boys are better but I do like the personalities very much -- I got a boy 'by accident' too and happily added a second; I'd always thought I'd prefer a girl. I do find a girl more of a challenge and have found far more females of all breeds and mixes to be snappy with other dogs, mainly strangers.

But this may be due more to the breeding background and socialisation of the dogs in question -- the personalities of my boys, who come from the same lines and are fairly consistent, were bred for good temperament, while Lily who is a pound cavalier of unknown background was probably backyard bred by someone who didn't know the first thing about the breed, breeding for health, conformation or temperament. And she was quite neglected when I got her from the poiund which suggests someone didn't work very hard to get her well-socialised as a pup. :(

With cavaliers, I really think they are all lovely. :)

Never had a little girl dog.

All my boy Cavs have had lovely natures - 3 completely daft and placid; 2 a little bit more feisty.

I find the more intelligent the dog, the feistier. Having fun with Bradley's spirited nature at the moment ;)

I had my heart set on a blenheim female...and got a tri boy. My next would be my blenheim female...ended up being a tri female. Love both of them to pieces and realize now...it really doesn't matter!

I was always under the impression that with the Cav's it doesn't matter boy or girl. Molly couldn't be any sweeter, she expects everyone she meets to lavish her with affection and I mean everyone! :p

I've never had a girl Cav, but Lucky is so sweet, even if only about 12 weeks so far. I have limited experience, but I'll bet it doesn't matter.

I wanted a little girl too ... like you I already had the name picked out. I'd been looking at the cute pink dog sweaters, etc. ... well, I just could not put a boy dog in pink!!! :) AND I have absolutely no regrets for choosing a boy dog ... Lucky is my dog ... period. It feels like it was meant to be and I'm so happy he's mine.

I'm sure whichever puppy you get - boy or girl - will bring you years of happiness and puppy dog kisses. :lotsaluv:

Thanks again for your comments  Do you think there is a difference in dominance between girls and boys? I'm enjoying reading your comments. :cffee:
