• If you're a past member of the board, but can't recall your password any more, you don't need to set up a new account (unless you wish to). Hi Guys,

Penny is due to get her little girls operation tomorrow and the vet told me that when she is under the knife :yikes he can do a proceedure on her eye ducts to stop her excessive tears.... Do any of you have any experience with this proceedure? Should i let him go ahead with it? Im just afraid it will have the opposite effect and her eyes will end up too dry.

What to you think?

I don't know what your situation is, but if you have a veterinary ophthamologist nearby you might want to have them take a look at her eyes.

Did the vet tell you what the problem is? Clogged tear ducts, entropian (eyelashes turned inward), etc.?

India had a slight entropian, so we did have a laser procedure done on her eyelids to pull the eyelashes away from her eyes when she was 1 year old. Her tearing did improve.

If entropian is not treated it can cause problems/scarring on the cornea.

India has 'buggy' eyes that attract dust, so we have to put drops in them daily to keep them clean.

Thanks for your reply. Im not sure exactly what her problem is. She has been tearing since we got her and the vet told me this is normal in cavaliers but there is proceedure he can do when that might help.

I might see if there is a veterinary ophthamologist nearby to get her looked at first.

Both myself and my husband feel so bad sending her in for her op :( ... I hope she will recover quickly. I hate to see her poorly. :flwr:

Our vet flushed Spencer's tear ducts during his patella surgery. It cleared him up for a couple of months but he's been tearing a lot lately.
 
Most cavaliers have watery eyes -- I'd not be inclined to surgically correct unless there's a real problem. You can find trying to fix something that ain't really broke causes new problems, and working around the eyes makes me wary. I'd want a specialist opinion I think. Or check with the vet that there isn't something serious causing the excessive tearing like entropian. If it is just watery eyes staining the coat -- that's what cotton cosmetic pads were invented for! :lol: Or you can borrow Lily -- she licks Leo's eyes clear of all that gunk; she either likes Leo or likes the taste or both. Leo loves it anyway. :)
 
Thanks for your replys Karlin and Spencers mom. I think im going to tell him to leave her eyes. I dont want to risk making them worse.

That is so cute re Lily... thats exactly what i need!! Her tearing is not excessive, they are damp most of the time.

Oh im looking at her now asleep on the fouton not a care in the world.. Im feeling so guilty!!
 
If she's blinking and/or rubbing her eyes, that would be a sign that she needs to go to an eye specialist. (That's what India was doing, and we were afraid she'd injure her eyes.) :flwr:
 
yea i agree..i dont think its necessary to do that unless it definitely needs to be done...
i actually asked my vet about monty's tearing thing (at the time i had no idea you could surgically do anythin about it) and he said that at the moment any sort of action would definitly not be necessary ..and that it wasnt that big of a deal...but there are lots of products and things you could use just to remove the tear stains?
 
How is the little baby doing? Is she recovering OK? Some have put a babygro on them to stop them pulling at the stitches, they look so cute :lotsaluv:
 
Hi Guys,

Well i collected Penny from the Vets on Friday evening and she was all suggled up on a sheep skin rug with a hot water bottle and a teddy!! She came home and was very, very groggy all night. She just lay in her basket with her hot water bottle and a blanket over her and she watched all the was going on around her. Anytime the poor pet got up she would stagger!! It was like she was drunk.

On Saturday she was like her old self again.. Her scar is very neat and tidy and i put a little vest on her and that prevented her from licking it.. i just cant believe how quickly she got back to her old self... She is currently running up and down from the sitting room (a great place to sit on the armchair and keep watch over the neighbourhood) to my office with great energy.

Thanks for your help and advise. The vet didnt touch her eyes and im glad because i would have hated for them to get worse.
