Insurance

My husband and I took out insurance on little Poppy, mostly because we thought if she ever needed something from the vets it would be handy - not because we thought we'd be claiming 'accidental death'. hey ho, we are - as sad as I felt doing it (I'd give a thousand times more to have her back) we figured the money could go towards a new furbaby some time next year - however, our insurance, with Tesco, are refusing to pay out because we don't have a receipt.

We drove hundreds of miles, about a year ago, to get her, from a guy who was a breeder, but we didn't get a receipt. And I have now lost his name and telephone number :( It just makes me so mad that Tesco were willing to believe my purchase price amount when they were setting the monthly payments we would make - but now that it's their turn to pay out they don't want anything to do with it . argh!

So sorry or the loss of your baby. I don't understand why they have to have a receipt. The death benefit is not payable based on the price of the dog, right? That makes no sense. Seems to me they would only need proof of death, as with humans, a death certificate. Did it say that in your original policy? I received mine from PetCare yesterday, and there are so may clauses, but I don't remember seeing that, but I may have over looked it. I would read my policy with a fine tooth comb. Then file an official dispute. Can't hurt. Where do you live?

We live in Northern Ireland.

Unfortunately, we never registered Poppy - we intended on having her as a pet and not ever breed her, and the breeder we bought her off hadn't done it himself (we did see her parents who were registered). Probably not the best way to have done it, but we've learned those things now - ahh hindsight!

Think back really hard to the day that you got poppy - do you remember seeing her parents? Their colors? What were their names?

Do you remember the name of the breeder? Were the breeders showing the dogs? If they were at all seriously into the breed, there must be some way that you can find them.. .. ..

On behalf of your insurance company - that's absolutely ridiculous. I can't believe they would stoop to that level!! I would file an appeal! :yikes

I was just looking at my insurance, PetCare. I didn't even realize it had accidental death on there. Looks like it only covers up to $500 though. No where near what some of us have paid for our babies.

You should see if you can find the guy online or something.

Good luck.

Wesley's Mommy.....Did PetCare indicate that you need a receipt on accidental death to file the claim?

Bonnie....... No need to beat yourself up, I did some things I shouldn't have when buying Lily. You just get so excited to finally have the puppy, all logic goes out of the window, when you see those puppies. You live and learn. We bought from backyard breeder, and they hope you can't leave without a puppy. They were right in my case. But I wouldn't change it, we love our little girl so.

I actually don't have the paperwork yet, as I signed him up a few days ago, but their site says....

Accidental Death
If your pet should die from injuries as a result of an untreated accident, its original purchase price will be reimbursed, up to policy limit. $ 500 $ 500

I'm assuming they probably would want some sort of receipt to prove the purchase price. Hopefully someone else with PetCare will be able to give more info.

I have wondered if it is a good idea to get pet insurance. My fil is a vet (and is a hop skip and a jump away from us), so I really don't see it helping in that area, seeing as everything we may need would be at our disposal at a minimal or no cost.....

but, is it still a good idea, what are the benefits? We are bringing home our little one in March and it will not be registered (just a pet for us). Hmmm? Now this has made me curious!

Sorry for your loss!

I got it because I have a 13 year old Lhasa who has cost me a fortune, thousands of dollars, in medical bills. When she was a puppy, I didn't even know pet insurance existed. By the time I decided to check on getting it for her, she was 8, and the cost was prohibitive, plus all of her ongoing medical problems would have been pre-existing, therefore, not covered, so it didn't make sense. The other reason I got it for Lily is because of all of the health issues with CAVs, especially MVD and SM.

You are fortunate that your FIL is a Vet. If most things will be handled by him at no cost to you, then I don't know if it would benefit you. IMO though, if your baby needs a specialist for any reason down the line, that would be the reason to have it. I assume that would not be something your FIL would be able to cover. Just MO. Hope that helps. Congrats on you new addition. I am also a SAHM to Lily, 4 mos old. She takes up most of my day right now, and we love her to pieces, but it's hard work. Wouldn't trade it though. :l*v:

That's disgusting but don't give up. Get advice from Citzens Advice & then threaten them with anything you can. I have had some major dealings with Tesco (including one with their pet insurance before). My son is now fighting to get the rest of his owed wages off them after working for them for 4 years  :( They are a completer nightmare in every respect and are trying to take over the UK - watch out you Americans they are on their way over there too :(
