took daisy to the vet today...

hello everyone

i took daisy to the vet this morning, to have her eyes checked. the vet said (he is such a good vet i am glad daisy sees him) that her eyes still need the optimmune and she has been on vistamethasone eye drops for a month now, and he said that we will keep her on these for the next 3 - 6 months to try and get her eyes as best that we can, he said we have a good chance of repairing them. he said that it will be like she has sunglasses on all the time, but she can see ok. he said that her eyes are a normal moisture level now so that is good, just seems to be something that is covering her eyes.

then i said to him that she has been licking her back feet a lot and he said that he will have a look at the anal glands as licking the feet can be a sign of the anal gland needing to be emptied...... and it did! it was really bad, loads of it came out :grnyuk:

then i said to him about her ears as she has started to scratch them a lot recently, he had a look and said they were quite bad, and he said that her ears were really hairy inside and that you need to pull out some of the hair in the ear (she didnt mind this at all) to help air get into the ear, once he had done that i could smell her ears, which wasnt nice. he put in some cream called otomax, which i have to put in her ears for the next 2 weeks, twice a day.

we have to go back and see him in 2 weeks time to check her bum and ears!

poor little daisy - she certainly has a hard time. i asked the vet if he felt we were being cruel by keeping her and he said that he wouldn't have her put down or anything, but he said it was a shame for daisy and he felt sorry for us having the problems and cost of it all.

just wanted to keep you all posted about how she is getting along...

oh my I had to comment just to say, she is one adoreable puppy! Your vet sounds wonderful which is making all the difference here - we should all be so lucky to find such a vet!

Gosh - that's a lot in one day. Sounds like there is a chance you can fix her eyes - that's great, although I'm sure the upkeep is not too fun. Ella had to get her anal glads emptied once when she was about 3 months. We also have some suff to clean the inside of her ears which the vet says has cleared her right up. Only we had these problems come at us (and my checkbook) one at a time. I'm sorry that you had to deal with so much at once but THANK GOD Daisy is with you and not someone else who wouldn't take care of her the way you are!!! :flwr:

Poor diasy that is alot in a day, she is a very brave girl and so cute!!

Emma you need to see a proper specialist who knows what they are talking about if indeed this is Dry Eye/Curly Coat which it certainly sounds and looks like to me from your previous descriptions, pictures and present treatments given along with their results. Have you sought a clinical diagnosis yet? ask for a referral from the vet to a specialist ASAP.

Repairing the eyes is sadly not possible if indeed it is DE/CC, they may well stay as they are for a while but with this condition they will only deteriorate.
Your vet may well be a good vet but this requires the advice of a specialist in their field.

Have you been in touch with the A.H.T with the numbers that I gave you? they will be able to give you the help, advice and treatment that she so needs to get started on now.

Have you told her breeder about the problems that you are having still? I would be looking for some financial token payment towards your vet costs...after all she knew full well that she was like this when you were given her, that was disgraceful enough to do that let alone leave you to continue with the expense of treatment.

i really dont know if it is dry eye, he said that the eyes were back up to the normal moisture level now, and i dont know if it is curly coat, her coat isnt actually curly. he said that it is more to do with her immune system.he says that there is like a layer over her eye which needs to be cleared, and that is what the eye drops are doing.

i havent phoned the specialist numbers you gave me, it wont be easy travelling to these places from where i live. that isnt an excuse, but part of me feels that she has been through so much that i shall look after her as best i can, and see my vet when necessary. after all, she is a very happy puppy, even though she has these problems, she is still normal with her playfulness, and getting excited etc etc.

as for the breeder, i havent phoned her, i did notice on the cavalier club website that she is no longer recommended as a breeder for this area. i dont feel that i would actually get very far with her, after all , she did just give her to me, i didnt pay for her, and even though she didnt tell me the full extent of the problems it was my decision to take her.

its a difficult situation to be in.

Hi Alison, just wanted to let you know, i had a think about what you said and i have just called Diana Stevens, she was a lovely lady and i spoke to her for 30 minutes, i told her about daisy and she agreed that it sounded like DE/CC but she didnt think that daisy had it too bad at the moment, but that it could get worse in time, def. sounds like cc from what Diana was saying though. she is going to post me some info from AHT and i can show my vet the info then too which will be good.
she also said how we could meet up as she comes down to devon in the summer, which will be really nice.
i am very grateful that you gave me dianas number, as she was lovely and has really helped. i guess i was just a bit overwhelmed at first as i didnt know what to do.

am so sorry emma that daisy's poorly you have a had a rough time with your pup. Lady had to have her glands emptied at her first vet check at 8 weeks but once we changed to jwb food she hasn't been scooted as much as she did (she was on predigree at breeders) which can be a sign they needed emtying could you give her more fibre then they emty themselves i think that i read that one here some one correct me if am wrong. Sorry can't be of anymore help with the other conditions could some tell me what curly coat is? Also i didn't know that licking back feet can a sign of anal glands needing to be emptied thanks for that info.

thanks for the reply, daisy has got a few problems thats for sure, but i look after her really well and hopefully she will be ok. i feed daisy on james wb as well, and she seems to like it. hopefully her anal glands wont be too bad when we go back to the vet in 2 weeks time.
