Unhappy Passed away: Jesse:(very active!) 11 year old tri cavalier

I know very little about this dog at the moment.

However the owners tried to surrender it to the dog warden in Navan or Meath (not clear where this dog is). The warden told them if it went to the pound it would be put down, as few would be likely to want to take an elderly dog when there are pup[pies in the next kennel. So the dog is back with the owners. Apparently the family who owned it have 'given' it to their mother who doesn't want a dog.

The warden notified the small rescue in that region today. I have spoken to the rescue and she is going to ask the owners to bring the dog in to be checked by her vet so we at least have a health assessment.

If the dog is in good shape then I will try to find a home. I can help split transport costs etc if the dog has an offer of somewhere to go as a retirement home.

Plese note I will not know anything further til the dog is health checked which hopefully will be done tomorrow or the next day.

Any offers of help please post or PM!

This dog will be put down if I cannot offer any alternatives.

A little more info. This is an 11 year old male, he is neutered and vax is up to date. Owner is in Ashbourne; I am going to try to ring them later and find out how he is healthwise.

Looking for a retirement home as the alternative is, he will be put down.

    Karlin,

Is there any chance of us finding an 'escort' over here for him, as was done with Sam (Hammer as was)?

I could take over from the mainland, but obviously he's far too old to come across on conventional dog transport.

How much time does he have?

No further info on him yet. I won't make any decisions on him til I find out what shape he is in.

If he is OK I will be looking for a foster for him as he will need a place to go for a week or two until we get him sorted one way or another and decide if it is possible for him to travel or if he needs to focus on getting a home here.

Fingers crossed for him, as not all 11 year-olds are ailing. Monty is 11 and has just a low grade murmur, which doesn't bother him.

Ok story on him clarified -- he has been a much loved pet. he sounds like he's in good health. Owner is taking him to the vet yesterday or today for a health check for me and is very anxious that he find a good home if possible.

He belonged to the son and his wife; but they moved somewhere that they couldn;t have the dog, and the mother has had him for several years. But now there's a grandchild who is asthmatic and the grandmother minds the child and this is causing serious problems. So there is a quite genuine reason for trying to place him.

He was neutered at 6 months and has always been well looked after.

Thanks for the various PMs so far on this guy. Once I know his health status I will let people know. At the moment he is safe with the owner but the idea would be to get him to foster; I do have offer of foster from this weekend. Alternatively he could likely stay with the owner until rehomed or transport is arranged depending on what happens next.

If he goes to the pound he will have NO chance. I just spoke to the warden; pound is full and he woulkd be pts within 24 hours. The owner is very upset at the situation but feels helpless.

Ok I have spoken to the owner. The difficulty with these cases is going on information coming to me at second or third hand in this particular case.

The situation with this fellow is that the 7 month old baby in the family has severe asthma to the point where she has been hospitalised a couple of times already. So the owner must find a home for him as he cannot be around the house when the baby is there. She is minding the children for 5 days next week while the parents are away and has already had to book him to kennels so that he won't be in the house at the time.

However she is extremely responsible and a very nice woman who just has no idea how to go about rehoming a dog of this age. She has had him to the vet today and the vet said he needed a tooth descaling and his ears cleaned, both of which she has arranged for when he comes back from kennels. He has a mild heart murmur but is not on any medication -- pretty amazing for an 11 year old guy. On top of that he is walked briskly TWO MILES a day and is well able for it. The vet said she would be very reluctant to see anything happen to him as she feels he has a good few years in him yet!

He is a tricolour and somehow I forgot to get his name! She has full papers for him etc. He is neutered, up to date on vaccines, and is groomed every three months so he will also be groomed just before he goes to a new home.

So I will definitely take him on as a rehoming project. There is less urgency as he is in kennels anyway next week, then has his vet appointment, and she is happy to hold on to him when I am gone for two weeks in early March.

That means fosters are off the hook (for now anyway!) and the goal is to find him his retirement home -- though sounds like he would be outwalking most of us!
