Hello. Anyones Cavvy itch like crazy? I found two things that have worked wonders!! 1- I use the frontline every 2 weeks. This was recommended by a vet. 2-her special diet. I had a diet made for her by chef k9.

My little one was so itchy, that it would wake her up in the middle of the night to scratch. She always had dry skin :-( Not to mention chronic eye infections. SO HAPPY TO SAY SHE IS HEALTHY!!! Except for her shots....hasnt been back to the vet in 2 years!
 
teddy is itchy with unknown allergies. The normal blood tests showed a very slight allergy to dust mites, but not fleas, spray was used but did nothing to help. steroids stopped the itch scratch scab, so scratch a lot more cyle, but once off and after a failed, as I see it food trial, he's back to licking and scratching, though he doesn't do much skin damage, due to the cycle being broken. The origin of the moving, red spots, is still an ongoing mystery.
 
I'm glad she is doing better. :)

I do have a concern though. If she has allergies, unless they are to fleas, why would a vet want her treated with Frontline every two weeks? Just seems a very heavy dose of chemicals (remember you are coating the dog in pesticide that then enters the bloodstream; generally people use Frontline and similar products with extreme caution and there are wrnings all over the package on giving the correct dose). Maybe it would be worth leaving aside the extra Frontline treatments and see how diet alone works? Or I would definitely seek a second opinion from a different vet. I'd just be concerned at that level of chemicals if they haven't identified anything they are directly addressing. Frontline should act its full period without needing a second treatment -- I just cannot imagine what else this would be killing on the dog that wouldn't be eliminated in a single treatment. icon_nwunsure There can be serious side effecs to the buildup of large amounts of pesticide in a dog.

Also it does sound like you are correctly diagnosing and addressing an allergy with your cavalier. But do be sure you are also aware of syringomyelia, which is very prevalent in this breed and which, when symptomatic, has scratching as a very common sign (it is often called 'the scratching disease'). and also view some videos of the typs of scratching that are particular to SM (it can be aggressive amounts of regular scratching especially at ears, head and neck, but often it is a very distinctive air scratching where the dog doesn't actually make contact with the body and scratching that is more prevalent on the lead, where the dog can go into a kind of bunny hop as it tries to scratch. Dogs also typically will scratch more in the morning, at bedtime, and during the night). Even if this definitely isn't a concern for you, it's a good idea to print out the documents that are downloadable there and give them to your vet for their files, as it may help another cavalier. :) SM is typically misdiagnosed as other things like allergies, so it helps vets to know what other options might be if the dog isn't responding to one type of treatment. Poor Teddy! THE UNKNOWN RED SPOTS!!! yes Gwyn has them too. She is very sensitive to things.....being out in the grass too long, makes her itchy. Eating bad foods makes her itchy...the gunk in pet food,does bad things to her, its very unhealthy. I know it seems crazy, but consider a diet for him. It wasnt that much more expensive...and i see a world of difference...im telling you she has never been healthier and happier. She even lost weight! She does still get the red spots once in a while....scratches a bit, but then they go away after a day. I try to not let her sit in the grass for too long too.

I will definitely look into SM. Thank you for the info. I did see 4 vets, a skin specialist, and an eye specialist, b4 i decided to try the frontline every 2 weeks. Sometimes we do every 3 weeks. You may be right....maybe her diet alone will work. We will try it.

Sorry...explain. Is that saying that she scratches because she may have a disorder of the spinal cord?
