A Cavalier at the Clumber Spaniel Nationals

Last week we attended the Clumber Spaniel Nationals in Ann Arbor, Michigan. We had Hadley, our Clumber Spaniel, with us, of course, but also took Buddy, our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. There were only a handful of canines who were not Clumbers in attendance and none of the others particpated to the extent our Buddy did. He had a ball as the Mascot at the Fun Relays, cheered his sister Hadley on as she took (and passed) her CGC test, watched Obedience and Rally while being a very good boy and slept under my chair thorugh most of Conformation. As a highlight to the week we went to watch the Hunt Trials and Hadley was scheduled to, and did take, a Birdiness test, to see if she might be a candidate for Hunt Trials in the future. When the evaluator finished with Hadley (the good news is that she is not one bit afraid of the birds; the bad news is that she needs to work on a "soft" mouth), she asked if we would like to have Buddy evaluated. Off he goes into the field! He followed the bird carefully but never would try to put it in his mouth (which would have been a sight as the bird was almost as big as he is). Anyway, we had a wonderful time, all the Clumber folks loved Buddy and he has been invited back next year! Here are some photos:

I love all the clumber pictures Phyllis! Esp. the last one with both of them waiting to go together!

That last pic is priceless! I think Clumbers always look so friendly. They are very rare though aren't they?

Clumbers are 122 in new registrations on the AKC list. There are usually only 200 - 250 new puppies registered each year. However, because they are not as "popular" as some breeds you can generally get one from reputable breeders without terribly long waits. They are starting to show up from puppy mills so be careful. I have fallen in love with the breed. They are pretty laid back and oh so much fun. They love to carry stuffies, wag their tails non-stop, are social and love you without being velcro, have an independent streak that makes you laugh more than makes you angry. They can be couch potatoes if you let them, but actually can do a pretty good job at obedience, agility, tracking and hunting. We have both Hadley, our Clumber, and Buddy, out Cavalier, in Introduction to Agility classes right now. Neither are stars but we are having fun. Buddy is liking it more than Hadley so I may switch her to Rally.

Thanks for the comments on my crew. We love them both!
