• If you're a past member of the board, but can't recall your password any more, you don't need to set up a new account (unless you wish to). Chronic Cough

Hi All:

My 9 year old Sasha has a chronic cough - day and night. This is due to a very small throat opening from surgery she had for laryngeal prolapse at age 3. Needless to say, it is getting very nerve-racking listening to her cough constantly and it's hard on her throat (and my nightly sleep) as well.

Anyone have any suggestions for products to use or you have used? I have had her on guifenisen cough syrup which she hates the taste of (can't blame her) but thought i might try the health food stores for something more natural.

Thanks for any input on the situation.

Poor little sweetie and poor you because lack of sleep is very draining. I am wondering if something as absurdly simple as a humidifier would help... a bit like the sort of thing that people often put in the room of a croopy child? Have you spoken with your vet about this, because he may have an answer.

I don't want to cause you more worry, but has her heart been checked by the vet or cardiologist? At her age a chronic cough could possibly be a symptom of a treatable cardiac condition.
 
Gee that's good thinking Cathy. It is easy to overlook things because historically something has been so in the past, and yet may not be the case now. :cool: :cool: :cool:
 
I hate to say it, but that was my first thought too, Cathy.

Poor Sasha! And poor you, Sheri! Is your vet saying that this is from the surgery 6 years ago? If so, I might be tempted to take her to a specialist or if you have someone in your area who treats a lot of Cavaliers take her to him.

You say a small throat opening. I don't mean to sound dumb, but do you mean that her throat was actually opened because of the prolapse OR that her throat was too small for the tube that they used while they did the surgery?

You might also want to check and see if there is a holistic vet in your area. I've considered taking one of mine to try holistic medicine, and have still not ruled it out completely.

My gut says that it's time for another opinion - they call it Veterinary PRACTICE for a reason!
