New Eukanuba CKC Breed

shippers

Well-known member
I was in Pets at Home at the weekend and picked up a leaflet for the new Eukanuba especially designed for the Cavalier King Charles. Has anybody tried this food with their dog or is it not worth the buy? Sally won't eat the Eukanuba puppy food so would it be a waste of money trying the specialist breed one? Apparently it has been formulated using research into the breed.

I can't find anything about this on their website, so not too sure of the ingredients...but I personally wouldn't feed any Eukanuba foods, due to their ingredients and the way the company carries out testing on animals...

Hi!

I saw this at Crufts, got a lovely book on the breed they were giving away and threw the sample away icon_whistling

Basically I was told by the reps that this feed is aimed at putting weight onto fussy feeders and is high protein so should be used with care!

Like Nicki I wouldn't touch this feed with the proverbial barge pole! Nor Hills either (I have an issue with some research they did a few years ago)

You could try having a look on their website and/or emailing them and asking for a sample before you part with your hard earned on a large bag your Sally wouldn't touch!!

Hope this is of help??

On the topic

May I ask why do some breeders feed their pups Eukanuba and then send you home telling you to feed them that puppy formula and then the adult eukanuba?
My breeder (whom i fully respect) advised us and it seemed as if she was representing eukanuba (gave us free samples) but I wondered why (after learning everything from this site and others about ingredients) she would feed and suggest this product when there are clearly better foods out there.
Any idea? Weird right?

Speaking from a breeders point of view here.

There are MANY brands of dog feed out there, so good, some mediocre and some that just are not worth bothering with. All of the major brands of dog feed offer a "Breeder Club" service to breeders whereby you earn points for registering the birth of your pups with the feed company and they will issue you with puppypacks for free to give to your new puppy owners when your babies leave for their (hopefully) forever homes. In return for this you provide the feed company with the new owners name and address, most give you points that you can redeem for goodies at a later date, some will send a bag of feed for free, but they are all after one thing, NEW BUSINESS!!

Now come on be honest, who can resist getting something for free? A lot of breeders are members of several such schemes, they work out who gives the best puppy packs and will happily send their pups off with these packs and they have earnt points/free product for doing so!

Personnally I ONLY feed Royal Canin, YES I am signed up to several breeder programmes with different feed companies, but I ONLY ever use the RC puppy packs, this is two fold for me. MOST IMPORTANTLY is the fact that moving home is a MAJOR upheaval for a puppy, a change in diet at the same time is even more stress on an already delicate digestive system so I prefer to send my babies to their forever home with a supply of the feed they are most used to, NOT a 500 gram packet either, you get a 2KG bag from me!!
Secondly, the RC pack is actually a very good one, a storage bucket, a lovely brush and comb for baby, and a very helpful booklet packed full of useful hints and tips for raising a well rounded, well behaved puppy, along with my own booklet as well as many more gifts.

At the end of the day, what we feed our dogs is our own decison, some are better educated as to what they are actually feeding than others, many breeders use and recommend Eukanuba, that is their personnal choice and so be it.

I guess the old saying "If it ain't broke don't fix it" springs to mind here, along with "Speak as you find", each to their own at the end of the day, but an attractive puppy pack provided free of charge by a big name company certainly looks good!!

Just this person's (very) humble opinion is all!!

I wouldn't use Eucanuba, either, because of the cruel research they have done. I have register ed my 'puppy' with them though, as the website is giving away a free clicker.

Cathryn,
I had hoped you would respond to my question. I understand what you said and realize thats why she did that. I know she has her own dogs some that are around 14 years old and she told me she feeds them Eukanuba.
I knew that I didnt want to change Gingers diet in addition to a new home an all the new experiences we'd be going through so I kept her on the puppy food until she was spayed at 6 months at which time I switched her over to Solid Gold Wee Bit.
How do you feel about changing their food like every 6 months? Just to perhaps get different nutrients/vitamins that one food may have over another? Id be interested in trying Royal Canin for her and maybe switch on and off. She has a pretty strong stomach, and I think on that end she'd be able to handle it.
Thanks again, I always value your input as I know you are responsible and very knowledgable!!

Thanks for the good advice. Sounds like it's really not worth trying especially as she wouldn't touch the Eukanuba feed previously. At the moment I am giving Sally Purina ProPlan and sometimes add Butchers puppy wet food on top. Does anyone else feed Proplan? I'm just eager to get her diet as good as possible and provide the nutrients that she needs.

Hi!

Gosh a lot of things I want to answer here!!

Firstly changing diet every 6 months or so, in all honesty I can see no reason why not to as long as the change is done gradually over a few days there should be no real problem at all, why shouldn't they have some variety? another thought is that you may find one brand that she does really well on and not want to change her from it!! This happened to me when I went over to the Royal Canin range, they did so well on it I have never bothered to try another brand since!! Do be wary of higher protein levels though as they can put on weight so easily, I like to use RC Mini range Adult which has a protein level of 23%, my cuddle get about 250gms of this a day, except for a couple who are on the light version as they gain so easily!!

Secondly,

Royal Canin and James WellBeloved are both manufactured and distributed by Crown Pet foods, the Wellbeloved range is I feel better suited to those with the more sensitive stomach's and has a broad range of flavours including a white fish one! They are both equally good in my opinion!!

Lastly, Purina Pro Plan is indeed an excellent feed, WHEN you can get hold of it, a bit on the pricey side too, my friend used to feed this range and was buying direct from the manufacturer but experienced HUGE problems simply getting it delivered! So from her point of view it was pointless feeding a feed that was excellent but very difficult to pin down a reliable source for delivery! If the manufacturer's themselves couldn't be relied on what was the rest of the distribution chain like?

At the end of the day you need to swap about a bit now and again, you can get stuck in a feeding "rut" and be blinkered to new products that may suit your dog better, I know that I will be looking around the trade stands once I get back out showing again, whenever that may be!! icon_nwunsure

Darcy is at a very gawky stage right now!!

Cathryn, thanks for mentioning ProPlan. I mentioned one time on this site that I fed ProPlan and I got negative replies. I became concerned and started looking for another brand. I value the information I read on this site.

Then I started to think Breeze has been on ProPlan lite for about 9 years, right after puppyhood, which she ate ProPlan Puppy (chicken and rice). I also feed it to Scout and they thrive on it. Their coates are shiny, eyes bright and full of energy (well at least Scout is LOL). Even the Golden Retriever I owned before Breeze ate it. So I don't think it's a bad dog food. I would rather feed all natural or organic, but where I live there aren't any store within 20 miles that sell that type of food. I feel better about it now...thanks again.

One more thing the breeder that I purchased Breeze from gave lots of literature about not only Newfoundlands but other puppy and dog type information...how to groom, what types of treats and toys to give, food....etc. She did say, in bold type, feed Science Diet at your own risk. I'm not sure why, but I wouldn't...

I picked up a bag of Royal Canin Mini Adult and gave some to ginger and she VACUUMED it up!!
Going to slowly switch over to that for a few months. She seems to absolutly love it!!

I have the leaflet on the CKC food and was getting lots of pressure to buy it myself but my pup hated the puppy food and so was concerned about it. Glad I read this thread as we won't be buying it now and shall stick with the trusty Royal Canine....

Ah there you go you see, a lady with a really good sense of taste!! ;)

Personally I do not think that Purina does use top quality ingredients - the best thing about it is that they use "Tocopherol rich extracts of natural origin" to preserve it.

If you look at this site

http://www.dogfoodproject.com/ {USA based but most of the info applies here too}

it tells you a lot more about ingredients, and what they may actually be made of...

Eg DIGEST {as listed in Purina Adult Small Breed}

A cooked-down broth made from unspecified parts of unspecified animals. The animals used can be obtained from any source, so there is no control over quality or contamination. Any kind of animal can be included: "4-D animals" (dead, diseased, disabled, or dying prior to slaughter), goats, pigs, horses, rats, misc. roadkill, animals euthanized at shelters, restaurant and supermarket refuse and so on.

Do you REALLY want to feed that to your dog???

I do have some concerns over some of the ingredients in Royal Canin, but it is one of the better foods out there...and I know they are very supportive of breeders. They do have some good information on their website...but interestingly I cannot find any information about ingredients online...

Hi Nicki!

Have just checked into my breeders club folder from RC and I have a product info sheet for each of the feeds I would purchase from them with an ingredients listing, and also quite a detailed average analysis list for proteins, minerals, vitamins and metabalosied energy!!

RC do a range of breed specific feeds too, the one's I have lists for include, Dachsund, Poodle and Yorkshire Terrier, looking at these feed info sheets they list in the ingredients green tea and grape extracts (rich in polyphenols)!! Blimey!!

Thanks Cathryn - I have their phone number so I'm going to get in touch with them.

I do really like the food I'm currently feeding, it's the most natural one I could find, but delivery costs to me have got really high now due to the couriers charging ridiculous prices to deliver up here :(

it's http://www.naturaldogfoodcompany.com/
