Vetmedin Or Fortekor?

I am sorry to be a nightmare and I hope this is the right place to ask, but as you probably know from my other posts my Kaytee is on fortekor, My dog I had years ago had vetmedin and it was very effective for her.

When I took kaytee for a heart Xray I asked my vet which of the two drugs were the best and she said there is no real difference just personal preference or something like that.
She said kaytee will be fine on Fortekor and that most cavaliers that come there are doing great on it.

I wondered what you all thought? As I am also confused as I heard that if a dog dosent get on to well with frusemide that they can have vetmedin which does both jobs??

Thanks xx

Izzy was and many others, are, on both. The Fortekor was given first to slow his heart and then in two stages the Vetmedin, when he got breathless, to clear his 'tubes'. I'm not sure whether the vet meant blood vessels or airways. They gave him over two years of quality life, anyway.

Very interesting to find this. I had never heard of Vetmedin until today. Wallis has been on enapril (?) and lasix for about a month and I called the vet to ask about her wobbly back end and mentioned that she has a "juicy" cough. She's going tomorrow for an echo on her heart to see if she can be put on the Vetmedin. Evidently it hasn't been approved for use in dogs for a very long time here; I'm still learning more about it and appreciate the links, Karlin.

The vet wants her to go to a specialist and make sure that she doesn't have any valve damage which would mean she couldn't take the medicine. I'll post the results of the echo as soon as I know.

Cailean's on both, as was his father, Declan.

Vetmedin would be my 1st choice, as it worked on my dogs extremely quickly. Fortekor was added in for both dogs later down the line.
