Her gums have always bled :(

Hi, Hope you are all well.
I wonder if you can help with this? My kaytee is 8 and though she has had a teeth scale A year or so back she still has a plaque build up on the far back teeth, ever since I have had her, her gums have bled if you try to gently brush the teeth, she did have gingivitis which was a while back and I don't really remember what this is or does? But anyway the vet checked her teeth a few weeks ago and said stick with what I am doing, which is putting Logic toothpaste on her gums and teeth, though I brush my other cavs teeth kaytee finds this painful.

I am really worried though about the plaque as she has a bad heart and so many other problems dont want these to cause more, though the vet says they are good for her age I still want to get rid of the plaque without putting her through a scale at the age of 8.

Do you know what the scraper things are the vets use? could I get one as the plaque really comes out and I am sure I could scrape it off with the right tool. Or do you have any other ideas?
Thanks and sorry to have gone on! xxx

I'd follow your vet's instructions. The vet can scale them if the problem gets bad. I woudn't try scaling teeth yourself -- this can cause serious bleeding and damage teeth and gums if you don't know how to do this correctly. Just go with your vet's guidance. Some minor plaque buildup is not a big deal. Given her other health issues I really would not worry about this -- just use the Logic.

Baggy had plaque on her teeth too. I give her Dried Tripe or Cow Ear or other dried chew treats.

You have many possibility to brush the dog teeth.
to feed raw bones (throat or wing of chicken)
to feed dried bread
to feed dried chew treats

Thank you both and thank you catalina for going to so much effort to explain to me means a lot. Forgot to say Kaytee has irritable bowel disease so cant eat anything about from her dried vet food, so thats where it gets difficult :( sorry catalina for not saying before and wasting your time, thanks again xx

I get the same type of flat rawhide chew but without the additions. These I think are the safest rawhides and would be a good option. Zooplus.co.uk have something similar available in Europe -- the Dentafun ones I think they are called. Lots of vets andpet shops also carry them.
