• If you're a past member of the board, but can't recall your password any more, you don't need to set up a new account (unless you wish to). I just found out there is a clinic in Columbus in March and wonder if these are the kind of tests I need for Hali? Thanks
 
Breeders often get eyes tested on puppies but not always unless they are intended to be show dogs/or bred. It doesn't hurt to get eyes done and if there is anything serious, such as a juvenile cataract, they would catch it early. It's not really necessary to get young puppies hearts done, if there was something serious usually a regular vet would catch it. It wouldn't hurt of course. However, from the age of 2 on, it is important to get hearts tests, ideally annually. Prices at clinics are much lower than if you were to take the dogs to specialists offices by appointment.

I do hearts and eyes and started both at a year old. I know that at a year old it doesn't say a whole lot about the heart...but for the price I can't pass it up.
 
The Columbus clinic (in Pataskala actually) is next Saturday, March 2nd. I'm taking both Bentley and Clancy for hearts and eyes. When I looked at the Optigen site they didn't seem to have or need anything from Cavaliers, so I'm not doing that bloodwork.

I'm anxious to see what the cardiologist says about Bentley. At the PSOM study last July the cardio heard a "click" in his heart, and said this may be the beginning of a murmur. He suggested having another listen in a year, but with this clinic I thought I'd like to take him for a listen even though a year hasn't quite passed.
 
The reason I asked about the optigen tests is that my mom is bringing her dog from Pittsburgh. He appears to have had a puncture wound in his eye from who-knows-where before my mom rescued him. He was to the ophthalmologist who didn't know for sure whether there was a genetic component to his eye problem.

Is there any reason to have the eyes checked on an 11 year old? Misha just had his visit to the cardiologist, so we won't be needing a recheck on the heart. His eyes are otherwise normal.
 
I'm leaving in a few minutes for the clinic in Pataskala, Ohio, to have Clancy and Bentley's hearts and eyes checked. I've not done a clinic like this before. I'll report back once I am home again this afternoon.

Clancy is probably a bit young; 18mos. The cardio at OSU heard a 'click' in Bentley's heart when he was there for the PSOM study last July. He suggested I have him listened to in a year's time, but here's this clinic and I don't see any others listed close enough to take advantage of. Bentley is just past 4.
