Stella...Our 5 wk old Female Tri-Color

This is my first post and figured I should introduce the new pup. Stella is 5 wks old. We will be picking her up in 3 wks (on her 8 wk birthday). She is going to be a perfect addition to our family and will be a great companion to us and our female Cocker Spaniel. Now the loooong 3 wk wait.

She is so cute. Can dream of picking her up and loving her. Congratulations on your coming new addition.

Oh, little Stella is precious. Eight weeks is so young for a little Cavalier to go to a new home. She will be very, very tiny, only about 4 pounds or so, and need alot of extra care, and patient training. Be sure to keep her isolated from other dogs until she has all of her shots, and her tummy may be a little sensitive at first. Alot of great information here on the boards, so read up and down, and around the corner. You will learn so much here!

I was under the impression that 8 weeks was the correct time to bring a pup home, is this not correct? I don't want to bring her home if it is not safe.

Hi
I am not sure but our experts will advise, i can only say all my three each came home at eight weeks ,she does look a little wonder and a little cracker.:rah:

Yea, Stella will be coming home at 8 weeks as well. The picture of her at 5 weeks is a picture from the breeders house.

I believe 10-12 weeks is the recommended age to bring home your new Cavalier puppy. The extra few weeks they spend with their mother and littermates really makes a big difference. We brought both of ours home at just over 11 weeks and they are very independent, confident pups. I would wait for a few more weeks, if possible (I know it will be hard but it will be worth it!) :flwr:

Folks in the UK and Ireland correct me, but I think that eight (8) weeks is much more common and accepted there, than in the States where typically good breeders wait until about 12 weeks. Being on the western side of the Atlantic, I am biased toward thinking they should stay with Mom longer but there are pluses and minuses both ways. The most important thing is that you are dealing with a quality breeder who will be there to help you. Good luck!

Ahhh she's so cute l bet you cant wait :lotsaluv: no idea about how old they have to be as l love the oldies so Ive never had the joy of a little puppy, but she's just perfect

Stella sure is a cute little thing! You can spend the time waiting to go shopping for her, just like the rest of us do when we're waiting for a puppy :D

The CKCSC Code of Ethics says 8 weeks is the minimum age a puppy can be sent to its home, but they recommend 10 to 12 weeks. My personal opinion is that 8 weeks is a little young. There is so much they will learn from the mom and siblings between 8 weeks and 10 to 12 weeks. Any extra time you can wait past 8 weeks will make a difference; you wouldn't believe the difference we see in our puppies between 8 and 12 weeks! BTW, our puppies go to their new homes between 11 and 12 weeks.

Having said that, I know there are lots of puppies that went to their homes at 8 weeks and did just fine. Like hbmama said, you just have to take a lot more care and watch her a lot more carefully.

First off, Stella is adorable. :lotsaluv:

I actually planned to have my pup at 12 weeks and his breeder wouldn't let him go earlier. I had my son's baptism at the time he was due home so we postponed for a week or two. I feel it really made a difference. He slept all night in his crate right from the start. He was house trained very quickly because the breeder trained him and so did her older dogs. He was better socialised. He isn't frightened by fireworks or any noises either. You see once they come home, you have to keep them a bit isolated while you wait for vaccines. They miss out on so much.

I also find Dylan has nice doggy manners. He must greet nicely as often people comment their dog doesn't like other dogs much yet they are so happy to see Dylan. Lots of big dogs come down to his level. I've met a lady whose rescue dog didn't like to play instantly do a play bow.

We got Beau at 8 weeks, Elvis at 12. Very big difference in socialization. They're both over 2 YO now, and Beauregard is still much more 'needy'. We won't get another one that young.

Hi,

congratulations on your new pup - what a cute photo. We had Harvey at just over 8 weeks and I really wish we had waited until 10-12 weeks as recommended on here. He is a VERY scared dog and we have had a number of problems with his behaviour and he took a lot of extra care. I know it's a longer time to have to wait, but if they stay with their mum and siblings a bit longer they have that few extra weeks to become more independent and sociable which makes a BIG difference. If I could turn time back and knew that Harvey would be so timid and frightened of everything we would definately have left him with his mum a bit longer....

I got Holly at 14 weeks. Would have been 12 but due to other circumstances she couldnt come at that time.
I do know that most pups are rehomed at about 8 weeks here though. I personally think a little bit longer would do no harm, and probably even do some good!

Thanks for all of the opinions and information. I am actually going to talk to our breeder today and see if we can postpone the pickup a couple of weeks. It will be tough to wait longer, but if it is for the good of the pup, I will gladly do it. Thanks again. I will follow up after our conversation.
