Geordie - MVD Update

We took Geordie to the cardiologist 2 weeks ago, wanting to make sure he's on the right medicine. He had an echocardiogram again, and more chest x-rays. Our regular vet emailed the digital chest x-rays that were taken on June 18 when Geordie was coughing.

The cardiologist told us Geordie's murmur is now a grade 4. :( His heart has a mild left sided enlargement, moderate-severe mitral regurgitation, but no evidence of congestive heart failure. This was confirmed by two other specialists at OSU. So Dr. B is keeping Geordie on Enalapril for now. He takes one dose in the morning and 1/2 dose in the evening. Dr. B feels Geordie's June 18th cough and fluid in his chest was due to 'noncardiogenic pulmonary edema'. We don't know what caused it though.

We are supposed to return to the cardiologist in 6 months, or sooner if we notice changes in Geordie's breathing or any signs of respiratory distress.

Dr. B said when Geordie shows evidence of early congestive heart failure he will be taken off Enalapril and put on 4 other medicines, one of which is Vetmedin.

To look at Geordie, you would never know he has these problems (SM too) - he continues to play and snuggle and be his normal, busy little self doing perimeter checks around the fence, etc. He is happy to take all his pills - he thinks he's one special boy getting all those good pills wrapped in cheese and meat. He listens for the oven timer's beep so he can have his next goodie.

Just within the past 2 months, he has started wanting to snuggle on my lap in the mornings when I'm having my tea and reading CavTalk. :lotsaluv: I'm just enjoying every moment that we still have with him. :lotsaluv: I'm going to have to get some more photos of him to post!

More photos please! :)

Thanks for sharing these details, I think hearing about all the variations in this condition really helps people when they come to deal with it themselves. I hope Geordie stays stable at a grade 4 without any CHF onset so that you have many more years with him.

Praying that Geordie doesn't progress. With Karlin, thanks for posting the details. I know that at some point I will be faced with this (with two Cavaliers it's pretty much inevitable :() so I'm always interested in the stages, meds, progression, etc.

Cathy, please remind us....how old is Geordie?

I get a kick out of him feeling special when he gets his cheese/meds.

Don't you just love them and isn't it this kind of attitude that makes every day with them special?!?! Good for you, Geordie!!

Cathy, I hope that Geordie will continue to be a busy lil man for many years to come and stays at grade 4 without any further complications :lotsaluv:

I wish you and all your furbabies many years of snuggles and cuddles :flwr:

ps. would LOVE to see more pics of all your furbabies and the video you promised ;)

Oh Cathy, you have been through so much. You are just an angel from heaven for your dogs, as they get such wonderful love and care with you. I will pray that dear Geordie's condition stabilizes and he can remain your happy, bouncy, loving buddy for years to come!

Oh belated Happy Birthday to the special wee man :lotsaluv:

Sorry I missed your update - also that things are not good. I hope he will keep as well as possible on the meds - MVD is very hard, but once you get a good balance with the medications they can do very well.

Geordie sounds like he is enjoying a good quality of life, and that is the most important thing. Treasure every day with him and let him enjoy life to the full.

Love and hugs from us all here xx

I am sorry to hear the vet report wasn't as good as you wanted. Give Georgie lots of hugs and lovin' :lotsaluv:

Cathy,

I am so sorry to hear of Geordie's diagnosis. You've been through so much with your babies, it just seems unfair :(

One thing though. A friend of mine lost her darling Cav, Bobby, about 2 years ago - he was 14 and had been diagnosed as a grade 5 when he was 18mths old. They just let him lead an extremely luxurious life, kept his weight down and gave him so much love. She always said that even if he had gone at 18mths at least he'd have had 18mths of love. No one could believe he lasted as long as he did, least of all the cardiologist!

I know Nicki went through a lot with Peaches so maybe she can help you out with any problems you might encounter?

Big hugs to you and the babies from me and the boys xxxxx

Thank you Donna for Bobby's story. :) What an amazing little cavalier!
Geordie's life is free of stress and filled with love (and pills!). Nicki has been a great help all along with Charlie*ng*l and now Geordie.:lotsaluv: (Bless you Nicki)

Oh bless you Cathy - you know I'm always here if you need any help or just need someone to listen

Geordie is very special to me - well they all are, but he is extra special :lotsaluv::lotsaluv:

Hugs to you and Geordie and wishing many happy years for him just the way he is now.
