Despartely need help - hoping someone living in the Newfoundland or Atlantic Canada region can help recommend a vet familiar with the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of SM. For the past five months our current vet and others have been telling me that our puppy's "'neck scratching" and "back leg air movement" were normal behaviours - I contacted the breeder they thought I was "crazy" - I have been researching for weeks now to understand what is going on, the episodes are increasing and lasting longer - I came across articles related to SM and its as if I wrote the articles as to what is happening with our puppy - I need to find help for my precious friend!

Try two things:
1) there's a list of neurologists familiar with SM on www.cavalierhealth.org but not sure if these include Canadians. Perhaps someone near the border would be a possibility too.
2) contact Karen Kennedy or Pat Barrington in the Canadian Cavalier Club, http://www.cavaliercanada.com/ . They would know neurologists to talk to and perhaps vets in your region.
Let us know if you have any luck.
I'd also try another vet in your area with the printouts on the condition, the symptoms, and the treatment diagram from Dr Rusbridge, all of which can be donloaded as documents from www.smcavalier.com. A different vets might be more open to considering this is likely to be the problem and help get your dog onto some helpful medication in the immediate term, and get you connected to a good neurologist if needed in the longer term.

I think your best bet would be to give the Atlantic Veterinary College a call and see if they can reccommend anywhere to have your dog MRI'd. Unfortunately its not a well serviced part of the country as far as MRI goes or veterinary services of that nature. I'm pretty sure the AVC does not have an MRI but they should have access to one and know where the closest ones are. You may have to come West or go into the States to have one done. Even if you find an MRI out there you won't be able to find a Certified Veterinary Neurologist. Throw me a pm if you'd like to get in contact with Karen Kennedy. Shes a very good friend and neighbour of mine. She will more than likely tell you the same thing though.
I'd be finding a different vet armed with information to start a treatment program based on symptoms. Then work on getting an MRI.. that will definitely be the hard part.
