Afraid little 12-month-old

Hi Everyone,

Apologies in advance if this is a repeat topic...I did a quick scan for similar discussions, but didn't find any.

Bijou, my 12-month-old Blenheim, refuses to venture far from the house or take walks around our neighbourhood. When she was around 7-months, Bijou had a similar phase of anxiety, but read that it was common at around that age. Now, I'm unsure if this is just a phase or a larger concern.

We have a great dog park and walking path nearby that Bijou loves, but she won't budge. I have tried everything: treats, her favourite squeaky toy, encouraging words. I have resisted pulling or forcing her (she wears a harness).

Bijou was a timid puppy and thought she had outgrown it.

Any thoughts/comments/recommendations?

Poor little thing. Can you take her on a completely different route? Or maybe take her in the car to somewhere really interesting like the woods?

Perhaps if you have a friend who has a dog that she gets on well with, you could ask to share walks with them.Sometimes they can learn from older dogs and happily follow them? If she's timid all the time then it might be a case for an expert.

That's a really good idea.

Well wot you could do is instead of walking straight from your house door. Pick her up walk 50 metres and then put her down and walk back to the house try increasing the distance gradually and you should end up at the park

Maybe you just need to socialise her a little more? You can get those backpack things for dogs - perhaps if she's carried out and about with you she will become desensitised? And then maybe put her down to walk in places with lots and lots of high value treats?

It's not the same, but one of my girls quite frequently refuses to walk from time to time. I just pick her up (without looking at her or fussing over her) and then a few metres later put her down again. She usually walks fine then.

thanks

Thanks everyone!

I'll give your suggestions a try. I appreciate your advice!
