I see your points too. But the dogs are in pain. When you have a cavalier with SM you cannot leave out the dog's pain of the equation.

I should add: the dog's pain is a bigger part of the equation.

Exactly ,dogs are living creatures who feel pain. & deserve to be treated with care & respect
But the way things are at the moment more thought is put into creating & buying junk than into creating a living being & that is wrong

I just don't understand these people. I read yesterday that a certain person has 'reduced' her dog numbers from 9 to 5. Reduced?????? I thought that these were supposed to be much loved pets? How can you 'reduce' them so quickly?

I have often wondered about some breeders when I read about rescue dogs who are ex-breeders dogs. I got Toby from a lady who only bred occassionally, was fair obsessive about where her pups went, and who would never have parted with any of her dogs. I knew her quite well and we kept in touch for years until she moved away from the area.

My mum's first Cavalier Rusty, came from a CKCS Breeder who runs a rescue. He seemed a nice enough guy, and told us that Rusty wasn't actually a rescue but one of his ex-breeding dogs. I didn't mind this at all, but when we got her home to the vet he had omitted to mention that she had a grade 4 heart murmur at 5/6 years old (can't remember her exact age when we got her). But by this time, we had all fallen in love with her, so she stayed with us. I suppose I should have contacted him and said something, but at the time I couldn't see the point, as there was no way we were going to return her.

Rusty had three good years with mum and dad. My brothers and I paid for her medication (obviously insurers weren't going to cover an existing condition) and although she wasn't totally well she had regular vet checks and a good quality of life. She died suddenly in her sleep, and although my mum knew it could happen she was devastated.

A lot of rambling, but my point is, these are very loved dogs, and not commodoties to be chucked out after they are useful. How can you possibly take love out of the equation?

I'm going to have to stop writing as I am getting upset about this!

Yes I read that to, where is a dog is for life not just for breeding springs to mind.
Many years ago I had a dog called Merlin a beautiful Black and Tan. The breeder asked to use him at stud which I allowed her to do. One of the puppies born had juvenille catarcts and was nearly blind. I took Merlin to a KC registered eye specialist who could not find any problems with his eyes. Merlin was Never used at stud again despite several breeders asking me and even when I told them about the puppy they still wanted to use him. He was part of our family and remained so until he died.

Just read the piece, Margaret and her cavs looks lovely.
They bussed members from all over to vote I didn't realise this, Last Sunday I was hoping for good news and that Margaret would not be voted off, but sounded like she never stood a chance, and a certain chairMAN wanted to punch Margaret, well there you go. THESE PEOPLE.
Margaret you have been so brave, you have my utmost respect, if these people had an ounce of your decency and conscious, this sorry business would'nt be. Hold your head high Margaret, you are a class apart from them.

Margaret, unfortunately, some breeders don't actually care about their dog's offspring, just the money it will bring in

I for one am totally appalled at the attitude of Beverly Costello and also (but not surprised) by that of Veronica Hull.

I sincerely hope that the BIS dog never suffers from his SM. I wouldn't wish it on any dog, I've seen too many (including my own) suffer too much already. The heartbreak it brings is unbelievable, as you know from losing your beloved Monty.

I've always thought there is a difference between loving the breed & loving the dogs as individuals.
For some people they love the showing, history ,memorabilia etc & having dogs of that breed around but it doesnt really matter which dogs.

I love my dogs for themselves , I could probably replace them with "prettier" dogs but I would never have that little personality back again.
