Harleys first walk didn't go to well

Harley had his first walk today. It started well; I think he even really enjoyed himself. My two girls kept an eye on him. All the dogs we bumped into were a lot bigger then him and he was a brave little man and even went up to sniff them, until on the way back we came across a girl with a big 5 month old Alsatian. He was taking her for a walk and it was clear she couldn’t handle the dog. He was very eager to meet my three. The girls weren’t bothered by him but poor little Harley was so scared. I wasn’t sure what to do, I didn’t want to pick him up as this might become a habit, so I just walked on and my Husband followed with the girls. When I got into the car he sat on my lap and cried all the way back to the House. He calmed down when we got back home. Tomorrow I will just walk him round the block. I hope this has not given him such a bad experience that he will hate to go for walks now. I never experienced anything like this with my other dogs.

Aww poor little man, not a good first walk, but I think you did the right thing by walking on and not re-enforcing his fear:) Hopefully his next one will be better, will he be going to puppy classes? Its normally great for socialising.

Clearly the Alsatian and his owner would benefit from some classes too:rolleyes:

Definately, by the sounds of it, the only thing I'd recomend, is to try and introdce him to positive experiences with bigger dogs, so this doesn't frighten him in the long run,

Puppy classes are great for this kind of thing in a controlled enviroment, I remember a similar thing happened with our Lucy, when she was a pup, everything was going well with her socialisation, and walking, and 1 day we met a rather boisterous and HUGE Bullmastiff pup......and it freaked her out, to the point that she was very wary of bigger dogs for a while, but thru the puppy classes, and lots of exposure to different dogs, large and small, she soon overcame any inhibitions she had, to the poin, that when we meet the very same Bullmastiff, it's Lucy that chases him in play now :lol:

I belong to a Dog Training Club and they do their classes in 8 weekly sessions. You pay one yearly fee and you can train all your dogs for that one fee. Unfortunately I just missed the starting of the beginner’s class and the next one starts in January. I might ask if I can bring him along to just socialise a few times. He was ok with the other dogs on the walk.
I AGREE the Alsation and his owner would benefit from training classes(y)

Poor little guy! That is so frustrating when you want everything to go well at this stage!

I hope the next walk goes better for you! :xfngr:
