How to remove soot stains?

We were having a problem with our boiler and to cut a long story short it spewed a huge amount of soot around the garden, causing out blenheim cav's white paws, legs and tummy to go all sooty. I've tried bathing her with dog shampoo and while this removed a good deal of the heavy soot, she is still sort of stained grey. Does anyone have any advice on how I can safely remove this?
Thank you.

Have you tried gently working in a little baking soda with the shampoo on her legs and feet? That's what I used to clean Charlie's legs and feet when I brought him home from California when there were fires and blowing ash was everywhere. Rinse well! (y)
