• If you're a past member of the board, but can't recall your password any more, you don't need to set up a new account (unless you wish to). Can't believe I missed an eye ulcer.

Two days ago I noticed a tiny pale mark on Dylan's eye. I kept an eye on it and, as it wasn't gone by this morning, I called the (new) vet. They booked me straight in with the lady I wanted which was good. He had florescent dye put in both eyes and nothing glowed so it isn't an ulcer. She thinks it was an ulcer but that it's already healing. She said an ulcer can come and go in 24-48 hours so you can miss it. She didn't give any antibiotics, she said he's healed himself. I was quite impressed with her as she drew a diagram for me and explained all about ulcers. I'll keep checking it.
 
I didn't pursue this at the time (wanted to mind my own business) - but I question what your vet who did the STT gave you as normal values. Didn't you say Dylan's was 14 and vet said that was normal?

Can't copy and paste but this article says below 10 definite for KCS; 10 to 15 is likely that tear production is insufficient, and 15 to 25 is normal. Dylan may be borderline.

Haven't had time to look in vet texts. Corneal ulcers are classic symptoms in cases of KCS (dry eye) so now my suspicions are aroused again. You might want to follow up with new vet - wasn't it the old vet who did the STT?

Thanks Pat, yes it was the old vet who did the test. I believe it did go past 14 but he was looking for 14 which it reached in half the time, I think it continued after the 30 seconds.

Oh believe me, I'm the worry wart! I really appreciate all the research you do for me and everyone else. I used to think you were a vet, you're a wealth of information. Thank you :flwr:

I will be ringing my vet later to check what the results of that tear test was. Regardless, I think it's time I gave some non medicated drops after walks or perhaps twice a day. I have been recommended a couple of human brands and a dog one but any advice is appreciated.
 
Could it have been lipidosis ( cholesterol deposits) ? These also show up as small silvery spots on the surface of the eye. They are noted in the BVA eye exam but are not considered a serious problem , in fact they can disappear spontaneously. They don't if I remember rightly cause any watering of the eye as an ulcer would so ,not as easy to notice.
Hope Dylan is better now.

This was the vets first idea but then I said he had had a sore eye four days prior. Is the BVA exam they dye? Nothing showed up in that test.
 
Well your vet has obviously considered it and if Dylans eye was sore it is probably not that.
The BVA/KC test is the one done by eye specialists looking for cateracts and MRD and results in a pass or fail certificate.They do put drops in to expand the pupil .
Lipidosis, extra eyelashes and other things are noted on the certificate and if a condition is thought to be getting too frequent it "may" be added to the pass or fail list. Lipidosis is not a condition considered troublesome unlike extra or inturned eyelashes. It can come and go sometimes and is possibly conected to diet. Other listers may know more about that. Hope Dylan is improving
 
Thanks Evelyn, he hasn't had a BVA/KC test. As regards diet, we have no choice, Dylan only seems able to tolerate Chappie tinned food, anything else upsets his tummy. He also have raw hind chews and Fish4Dogs fish skins.
