By popular demand and thanks to Dog Training Ireland, the legendary dog trainer Dr Ian Dunbar -- a Cavaliertalk favourite! -- will be back at the start of April for THREE DAYS of talks and -- hooray! -- training sessions.

People can book for one, two or three days. There are places for people who wish to bring a dog and do the training, and for people who wish to observe. These are full day, 9:30-6 sessions and include lunch. I went to last year's weekend event and it was packed and I learned so much! Dr Dunbar gives only occasional talks and seminars and training sessions these days so this is a rare opportunity to work directly with this author of so many groundbreaking training books and videos.

This will be a great event if you want to work with your dog on RELIABILITY -- especially off-lead! This is what Dr Dunbar is especially known for.

I know that Tara and Lisa of DTI would be happy to help with lodging for anyone who wants to come from the UK for a long Irish weekend perhaps?

I know I am taking Jaspar for the games day and will probably go as a spectator the other two days.

Due to popular demand and by request, Dr. Ian Dunbar is returning to Ireland for a 3 day workshop. The workshop will have participant places for those who wish to bring their dog and spectator places for those who wish to observe.
FRIDAY: Off-Leash Reliability, Precision, Motivation and Pizzazz

Using the Natural Motivation Method, trainers will learn to phase out all training rewards as early as possible and replace them with more powerful Life Rewards until eventually, no external rewards are necessary because in a sense, the Response becomes its own reward. The dog becomes self-motivated and internally rewarded.

Learn how to increase the reliability in your dogs training
Applying the Test – Train – Test format to assess the dog’s understanding of instructions
How to increase motivation and make dogs want to comply without physical force, pain or fear.
How to set realistic and progressive criteria
How to put motivation and Pizzazz on cue
SATURDAY: Reliability

Learn how to quantify and assess your dog’s understanding of basic obedience exercises; including Settle Down, Watch Me, Sit, Down, Stand, Distance Commands, Stay, Come, Follow, and Heel
Learn how to identify training problems that occur in real life and competition and rectify them during the workshop
Learn why reliability must come before precision or style
Learn how to quantify your dogs quality and reliability of response including the “sit test”
Learn how to establish a behaviour baseline
Learn how to identify and understand your own level of control with your dog to allow you to set goals and improve on reliability
SUNDAY: K9 Games

This will be a day of fun and games. Games are extremely enjoyable and motivating for dogs, owners and observers.

Learning tricks and playing games rapidly accelerates the speed of learning. Not only do tricks and games motivate both dogs and owners to give their very best performances but also, tricks and games motivate owners to practice. For some owners, heeling and sit-stay homework is not very exciting, but many will stay up to the wee hours to practice for Musical Chairs or Doggy Dancing.

All tricks/games are designed to improve the quality of the relationship between dogs and their people and each individual game, (including musical chairs, doggy-dashes, retrieval races, woof relays and of course, doggy dancing), is specifically designed to fine-tune essential ingredients of your dog's training repertoire. For example, with tricks as simple as Biscuit Balance and Playing Possum, you end up with fantastic Sit-Stays and Down-Stays.

In addition, playing games is an enjoyable and non-threatening way to objectively quantify performance. For example, there will be only one fastest recall and only one longest sit stay. However, regardless of comparative rank of performance (compared with other competitors), the most worthwhile reason to play games is to establish a personal best, setting personal goals, and above all, striving to progressively better your best from week to week.

In the morning we shall play all sorts of games to quantify and fine-tune some basic obedience skills, including attention, position changes, stays, following, heeling, and precision work. In the afternoon, we’ll play a selection of the nine K9 GAMES®. Hopefully, all dogs and their owners will compete in Musical Chairs and the Doggy Dash. We will invite volunteers to participate in the Joe Pup Relay, Recall Relay, Woof Relay, Distance Catch, Take and Drop, Kong Retrieval, and Waltzes with dogs.

The participant (you and dog) places are booking up fast now. So if you want to take your dog along you should reserve your place soon.

Oh great so it'll be lots more Alfie snuggles for me :rah: And of course the others but I do love little Alfie :luv:
 
Alfie just looooves cuddles and hotdog, he is pooped out after last night, still snoring away in bed:)
 
I'm going to Cirque du Soleil on Fri late afternoon so can't do Friday, but have signed up for Saturday and Sunday with Jaspar. :dogwlk: Can't wait; this is really going to be fun!
 
Wish we could be there :( Did look into costs of ferry etc, but it was just a bit too expensive!

The UK participants are using www.aerarann.com to fly over with their dogs. Its about £12 for the dog! Just an FYI. Or just come as spectator. Would love to meet as many of you as possible!
 
Absolutely fabulous day; big crowd, lots and lots of dogs including two very cute puppies -- a dachshund and a parsons russell.... Jaspar is out cold. He is so exhausted that he is asleep downstairs still and all the rest of us came upstairs... :lol:. Games day tomorrow; can't wait! Jaspar was delighted to see his cavalier pal Elliott there with Amanda from CavTalk and her sister.

We got a taste of the games today when some dogs competed in doing the slowest recall (the dog to cross the finish line LAST wins!) and a rollover race... :rotfl:
 
Another brilliant day:rah:, the games were such fun for doggies and owners, Jaspar came first in one game :D, and Elliot third in another:D ....lots of great games played with the doggies, doggie dash and musical chairs were brilliant:jump:. Definitely the best course we ever did with the doglets and so much learnt and much now to put into practice.....:paw: Elliot now in a coma-type sleep....;)
