Humping

Is there any reason why a 10 mth old pup (bitch) who has been spayed would hump my leg??

Star has been doing this quite regular if I'm sitting/lying a certain way on the sofa. I've no idea why she does it.

Im not totally sure if spaying or neutering stops a dog from humping, I think some will just do it anyway. Distraction may help, give her a nice chew or toy maybe and see does this distract her and maybe you can train her 'off'. I am trying in vain to train this because I would prefer couch time to be invitation only.

My own 2 dont hump ever, my foster dog does, always this blanket, even if I fold it and put it away he takes it out and opens it the way he likes it. We respect his privacy but he'll be taking that blanket with him whenever he is leaving us.

Humping is a very normal dog behaviour. Stopping it is really a matter of training as noted above. Distraction, refocus... there's a link in the Library section on mounting/humping behaviour that might help.

I think it learned behaviour, and some do it more that others, when i took harley to puppy class, there was him and 7 labradors, not much use for socialising anyway one of the puppies (they were all 9 weeks old) use to hump quite a bit and the vet said to stop them by distraction or take away the toy, as once they learn its good they will carry on. Does that make sense. Her rescue dog was 3 and she had him neutaured and he carried of regardless, made no difference, however if its discouraged from an early age they dont miss the experience they never had. We did this with harley, at one stage he hadnt any toys left, and he doesnt do it at all now. He was neutaured about six months old.

Is it at certain times - my Merlin is very "excitable" around out time! - it was worse when there was me , mum and Silje our golen as we seemed to time with each other. I have now got scullcap and valerian for them and when merlinis really into "it" some gelsemium 30 c for him....

so far we have seemed to calm it
