Harley been bitten

Whilst on a walk yesterday we passed an old labrador and although both dogs were on leads, the labrador ran at harley and the leads got tangled up and harley was yelping. Anyway i just thought he was scared and after a bit of a fuss we continued on our walk. When we got home i noticed his hip was bleeding slightly and it is obviously painful. I bathed it with a little water, which just made it worse so ive left it alone. The wound is very slight more just caught the skin and about a 10p size of flesh in showing, but it very clean and not bleeding much at all, he has a vets appointment tomorrow evening to discuss he results from the animal health trust, and on going treatment so i thought id get the vet to have a look then, is there anything else i can in the meantime, its not covered and he isnt licking it at all. di

Di, you should go to the vet. That's quite a big wound but more importantly, the puncture could go a lot deeper.

Sorry to hear about poor Harley - yes you definitely need to go to the vets as soon as possible, Pauline is right. The worry is the bacteria on the teeth - especially with an older dog :(

In the meantime, bathe the wound with salt water {1 tablespoon salt to 550ml warm water}.

Hope Harley will be ok.

Oh Di,

I hope Harley is ok. Leo was attacked by a labrador a little while ago. What is it with this breed lately,,,,,,quite a few people have commented on it!

I was more shaken up than Leo but I checked him and double checked him for bite marks.

Hope the vet helps.

Mel

Awe, I do hope Harley is ok. It is very traumatic when your dog is attacked, esp as the cavalier breed is so friendly and loving to all dogs!
Izzie was attacked just last week by a huge German Shepherd and the owner didnt have it leashed.. disgusting! Fortunately she was ok, but I took her to the vets the next day to have her checked.

I hope Harley is alright now after the attack .

(Jasper was attacked on 12th May this year, it was an airdale terrier type dog, off lead, owners spluttering oh he's usually okay . He jumped on Jaspers backend, afterwards Jasper was obviously in discomfort, and he seen the vet that day. Jasper hasn't been right since, and he growls and barks at other dogs now which he didn't before, and he is very reluctant to go near the place where it happened.)

hi

thanks for all your advice, where would i be without you lot, anyway i kept the appointment for today, but the vet rang to cancle, (some emergency operation) so i said i really wanted harleys wound looked at, so saw someone else, (may as well have gone yesterday then if id known) anyway yes dog bites might appear nothing, but she shaved the wound area, the bruising is massive, poor little mite. Here i am telling him to socialise with other dogs, and looks what happens to him, i really thought the lab wanted to sniff harley and say hello, both of them were on leads, gosh these thing happen so fast, there was scuffle, a lot of harley yelping both of us pulling dogs back, the leads got tangled up, in fact harley would have better off the lead as he probably would have got away. Still, he has anti inflamatary (sorry spelling) and anti biotics, his pain killers have doubled the dosage, and the area to be bathed with salt water and arnica gel put over the bruising but not the wound itself. So you were all spot on. Thanks pauline, you were spot on. Now for the gruesome pic, look away if your squeemish.
Meljoy i agree with you entirely i thought there was/are a lovely breed of dog, labs i mean, if i see the owners again im going to tell them and show them the extent of what their dog did and the expense (£45 and counting) not to mention the pain my dog is in, just imagine if that was a child, well he is really. di

Hi Di,

Poor Harley...that looks awful. I'd be speaking to the lab owners as well if I were you. Like you said....imagine if that were a small child:mad:

I hope Harley feels better soon....Its made me realise how lucky we were when Leo was attacked:eek:

 Poor baby, that looks so painful...and when you think how little their legs are :( Does he need a stitch in that? Keep up with the salt water, I swear by salt water.

Just bathed it pauline, and put some arnica gel on the bruising, you couldnt see any of that earlier because of his coat, just a small hole, i really glad i took him now. No stiches Pauline, they think he was lucky, depends if it get pus inside it, then he will need an operation to cut it all out. Got to go back for another check up next week unless he is gets worse, then ive to take him back sooner. Im glad i took your advice and didnt leave it. di

Di, I'm so sorry that you and Harley have had that experience. Glad you took Harley to the vet, just to be on the safe side.
I hope Harley's wound heals quickly.
Sending gentle hugs to you both.
Take care and please let us know how Harley is doing.

Oh poor little Harley that looks very painful & how awful for you both:(
i hope he heals up real soon with no lasting damage to his confidence. It must have shaken you up too Di, so i hope you are ok :hug:
I would be tempted to have a copy of that picture plus vets bill on me until i bumped into the labs owners, otherwise they could (wrongly) think it was nothing much
Take care & plse update us

Poor Harley, I hope he gets better soon. The bite looks terrible. I've heard so many stories about labs attacking other dogs. My hairdresser's cav was attacked by 2 labs and he's lost a lot of his confidence now. They are not the quiet friendly breed you would think they are and the dog trainer at the school says they attack more often than GS's. If I were you I would try to find the owners and give them a copy of the bill and tell them you are going to report the incident to the police because you fear it could be a child next. If my dog attacked another dog, it would pay for the vets bill. There's too many people out there who don't care what there dogs do and they've no control over their dogs.
I'm angry :swear:

I'm sickened to read about poor Harley :( but TG he's OK. The Arnica Gel is meant to work wonders. Might be worthwhile putting some Bach rescue remedy drops in Harley's water dish as well.

Please give him a gentle hug from me and 's to you too, you must have gotten quite a fright.

I hope Harley is feeling ok, have had a couple of scares with dogs having to grab Chelsea up but nothing happened. We visited a friend who had a chocolate lab pup (about 10months) who was so excited, bouncy and in Chelsea face that twice she bascially put him in his place by reaching up with both paws grabbing his muzzel and griping with her teeth. Did not faze the dog at all.

She has another playmate, a older black lab who she gets along well with so long lasting trauma there.

Give lots of love a kisses.:p

Thats a good idea, i certainly will, i was hoping to bump into them today, but i think they are prob giving us a very wide birth, just wish i knew where they lived, im warning other dog walkers as well. di

Poor Harley, that looks awful!

I hope he heals up soon.

Some people just don't care about what there dogs do. What did the owners say?

well the man who had the dog on the lead said "right thats it, and dragged the dog away, the woman who was with them apologised and said she hoped harley was ok. di

Just reading this now.
Sorry to hear about poor Harley. Hope he is ok and won’t need anymore treatment.
Bad attitude from the owners. If you would know there address you probably could take them to the small claims court.
Sending  to you and Harley.
