Car Travel

Hi,
At the moment our two travel in the back seat with their car harness that attaches to the seat belt. They can lie down etc and have no problem being in the car. My 9 year old is in the back with them too. The only problem is we are due a baby in December and cant afford a people carrier and the two dogs the baby and matt wont all fit in the back seat. Sam would probably lick the baby all the time too!!

My hubby wants to put them into the boot but Im a bit nervous about this is case someone hits us and they get hurt.

Can anyone suggest a cage or a safe method to transport them in the boot? They like to be beside each other too, well what I mean is Charlie likes to be beside Sam all the time and poor Sam never gets a minute to himself ha ha!!

Why dont you put him in a carrier in the boot, its quite unlikely your gonna get hit in the boot... We put ours in the boot and he just falls asleep

Because it is totally closed off from the interior of the car, the boot has no ventilation and absolutely no way to be cooled down on a sunny day. It can be a dangerous way to transport dogs and certainly not a very comfortable way for them. You could end up with two dead dogs on a hot day and a medium length journey.

I think you are going to either need to get a car that will carry dogs and kids (a hatchback works fine, it doesn't need to be a people carrier), or travel with either dogs or kids. Will the two children not fit with the dogs crated in a single crate to one side in the back seat? What about a crate on the floor in the space behind the passenger seat, if the seat is pulled forward? A baby will not need leg room. I sometimes transport rescue dogs in a crate in that space. That would likely work til your baby gets older and you are ready for a larger car.

You could always fit the baby seat in the front and then whoever is not driving can sit at the back with the dogs.

Our usually go in the back seat but if there is no room I put their beds in the boot (or just pillows etc.), take off the cover between the main part of the car and the boot (the name of it escapes me at the moment) and they (except for one ) will happily stay in the boot and go for a snooze. If you are worried about them trying to get into the main part of the car, perhaps crating them in large crate in the boot or a divider would be a good idea.

This is good advice but not practical. I treat Sam and Charlie like babies and would never do anything to put them in danger. I accidently locked them in the car when they were pups and I smashed the side front window and cut my hand to bits to get them out!! We have a focus hatchback and its a roomy car, the ford people carrier would cost 350 extra a month which is allot when you have a new baby. There are three seats in the back so Matt and the baby will fit, I could put the dogs in the middle but this would mean they would be beside the babies, and they would spend the journey licking the baby which is not good. They also get very excited when we go to the park so they jump around and bark.

The idea of a crate on the back seat or floor is good however will this fit two cavs? One of mine is big, not fat just big!! This would leave the boot free for buggy etc. I would not feel comfortable however having matt or the baby in the middle of the car, car seats should always be behind the front seats for safety.

I dont want to leave the dogs behind, I want to be able to walk the dogs and have baby/matt in toe, plus when we visit the in laws we all go as hubbys mam loves the dogs.

a good quality dog guard would be fine for the back/boot of a hatchback. I used to have a cage that fit perfectly in the back of an escort (hatchback) but I sold it.
They have some good value cages on zooplus http://www.zooplus.ie/shop/dogs/dog_cages_carriers/carriers

Personaly im like you & prefer to have my two on the back seat & I have things that plug into the seat belt things (only have one at the mo as Cass chewed thru hers the last time she was in the car!)

Why not put the baby in the boot??? (thats a joke before anyone thinks I mean it!!!)

We put Charlie in the boot and he dosn't mind, we put the middle seat down so he can get some fresh air.

My girls travelled in the boot, with the parcel shelf removed and sometimes we let them on the back seat but they were hooked into the seatbelt thingy.

I remember when we were buying the car; we were checking out the boot space and how the seats folded down etc and the sales guy asked us what particular needs did we have and we both said in unison " we want to make sure the dogs will like it!" :D

....aah! those were the good old days :paw: :paw:

All this Euro talk about boots and parcel shelves is cracking me up...I've never heard these terms before! Here in the US...what you are calling the "boot" is what we call "cargo space" (pertaining only to hatchbacks, SUV's, & vans) where you can reach behind the back seat from inside the car and it's considered "air conditioned space" . What Karlin assumed you were talking about (I think) is the "trunk" (only accessible from the outside of the car by key)~ definitely not a place for any living thing! And, yes, babies always go in the back seat.

If you have a "boot" in the sense above, I would have no problem putting them back there. My SUV has a metal clip on each side of the cargo space that is attached to the frame of the car where I clip the harness attachment to. I also have a crate that fits in the back that I use. It is hard to find a crate that fits back there, though, as it has to be really narrow....

In the boot - with the parcel shelf in???

Sometimes, we make sure he has air, we take down the middle seat and let the window down so the wind comes in, or sometimes he just sits in the carrier on the back seat and i take the wire front of the cage

No I mean the "trunk"!! But you can take off the "roof" part of the trunk and have it like a "cargo space". Just imagine a 3 seater back set with a baby seat, a dog another dog and a 10 year old child in his booster seat - not enough space especially when the two cavs are used to a seat each!!

Hi

I think I have posted these pics before on a similar thread but here they are again. We have a Honda CRV which is a medium size friendly 4x4 and in the back there is enough room for a double crate which can easily take my three ,but in practice Rosie has her own bed on the back seat by my wife and she is (both of them ) secured to the seatbelt thus giving Poppy and Daisy even more room to strech out and sleep away any long car journeys.

Attached to the side of the crate are two fans for air circulation and inside theres a bolt on non spill water bowl and to sit on the bottom layer is vet bed then theres two Skyeskyns sheep skins then two fleece dog blankets for them to roll up in ,also assorted leads, harnesses ,coats and a full Cavlier emergency medical kit and two more thermosk flasks with more cold water .:)
