hi, sorry to hear about holly, harley has hip dysplasia, its horrid to see the xrays, harley hip isnt in the socket its grown outside, although he doesnt seem to be in a lot of pain, we are managing with pain killers, if the sockets worn away is it hip dysplasia, surely its only if is dysplased, harleys is obviously hereditary and has been like that since he was born. di

Just a quick update on how Holly has been getting on: I'm taking her back to the vet today for a glucosimine injection so hopefuly she will have some news for me from the guy in Cork.

We bought Holly a stroller, she has been out in it a couple of times she wasn't too impressed but I'm sure she'l get used to it. She seems to have a very high pain threshold, I can only imagine the drama if it was Bailey that was in her situation!

I will post later to let you all know how we get on at the vet.

I just collected the dogs form Tara's today as I was away for a week. Holly seems much the same, still limping and sitting a lot..

Since I last posted she has been to a veterinary physiotherpist twice. The physiotherapist thinks that hydrotherapy will really help strengthen the remaining muscle. Needless to say Holly wasn't too impressed by the pool but she did really well.

I will be bringing her for another session on Monday or Tuesday of next week and I'll bring my camera and post some photo's on here. It's a great place and it's only 1/2 an hour away from us

We had a similar problem with Molly in addition to her sm she has
hip dysplasia and the knee problem. She has never been able to walk too far. She has had a course of Cartrophen Injections, hydrotherapy and she is on Glucosamine. I managed to get a converted pushchair on ebay, because the back is open, she can hop in and out as she wants. She walks for about 10 minutes and pops onto her trike as we call it for about 5 minutes. It means now Dougall can go for longer walks as well.

Hello, I'm new to the forum. I live in Alaska. I have a neutered male cavalier, Lou. He is one year and eight months old this month. He was diagnosed with severe bilateral hip dysplasia when he was a little over a year old. Our vet suggested bilateral femoral head and neck excision. This is a salvage procedure and we went to an orthopedic specialist who offered other options. Since lou did not appear to be in constant pain and has had this condition since birth we opted for pain control and joint supplements. Lou has been on 25mg of Rimadyl a day for a few months now, although we started off with a larger dose of 50mg we we able to decrease that. He is also taking Dasuquin (similar to Cosequin developed by nutramax) and Welactin also by nutramax. The changes were slow but he is now able to do things he didn't before. He is a lot more active and is actually able to jump up on the couch, the dining room chair and the bed all by himself. He was unable to do any of these prior to the pain meds and supplements. I often chat with dog owners on our local newspaper's dog blog. www.adn.com and there is a dog owner with a westie who just recently had a hip replacement by Dr. Liska in Houston, Texas. Lilly my 3 year old Tri has had to have 3 surgeries for luxating patellas (ok I know she only has 2 hind legs but the pin broke on her first one so a second op was needed!) It's well worth the surgery, her quality of life is so much better now. I can recommend CORTAFLEX for additional help for Holly in addition to the glucosamine. Some anti-inflammatories for pain relief would be good for her too.

Just reading this now - poor holly
A friend at dog training has a miniature schnauzer with severe hip dysplasia, and was advised to take him to hydrotherapy to build his muscles back up before his operation (femoral head excision), this has worked so well that he has stopped limping, has a lot more muscle and hasn't neede to have the operation yet. He will need it, but at least when he does his post-op rehabilitation should be a lot more straightforward.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that hydrotherapy should hopefully help Holly as well. Fingers crossed.

I am pleased to say that little Holly will be given a new lease of life for christmas..

After many tests, x-rays and much speculation it has been decided that Holly will be getting a total hip replacement sometime in Decmeber.

The reason why it took so loing to come to this decision is beacuse one of the specialists that reviewed Holly's x-rays had concerns about her right stifle and was not comfortable giving her a new hip until further tests were done on the stifle. A joint tap and further x-rays were performed and our vetrerinary hospital and a small amount on inflamation was detected around the stifle.

On Monday Holly came to college with me .. She was given two full orthopedic examinations, one by a final year vet student and the other by a fully qualified vet. The poor little thing was then x-rayed again.

Anyway the good news is that the ball is now rolling and she should have an appointment for sometime in December or early Jan. The vet in UCD commented on how brave and strong she was and said she was a pleasure to treat

Oh and btw she will be treated at the Marie Louse Veterinary Hospital in Baldoyle anybody have any experience with this place?
