Puppy farms news item

As a result of watching the news items on the appalling conditions in puppy farms last week I emailed Carmarthenshire County Council to ask what they intended to do re puppy farms and to give my views.

I received a 'round robbin' email back today. The one pertinent piece of information in it was Quote " Many of you have called for commercial dog breeding to be banned, but that can only be achieved through a change in legislation probably at National government level"

I am not so naive as to think that all commercial dog breeding can be banned - as there is such a great demand for puppies and the really good and caring breeders only produce a few litters or only one or two.

But something has to be done about puppy farms, and I know that Karlin knows a lot about that - but who should we be lobbying to make a chage in legislation? Would it be our MPs or is there someone more approriate in government that I can contact?

Sorry if this sounds a bit stupid , but I've not done anything like this before, but I want to try and do something!

HI

Have a good chew at your local MP ,mine is Frank Field who fortunately is a bit of a Socialist rebel and is his own man and each time I moan at him he always replies .:)

I think the advice is correct in that it is legislation that will curb the abuses in puppy farms. Framing the legislation seems to be extraordinarily difficult here as individual states struggle with focusing the legislation on those who need correction. Iowa, well known for mills, has legislation bogged down awaiting common sense :bang:. I believe Ohio has made terrific strides but I'm unsure how their law has affected the hobby breeder. I think repetitive well formed letters to your representatives are necessary to instigate the forming of good laws re:puppy farms.

Smiley not intended but doesn't take to deletion

hi Yorkysue,as ive just said on another thread if you have a plan then you will get overwhelming support on here.
Doesnt sound stupid to me,id love somebody to try & do something we can all get behind:smile:

One of the things I think we need to push for is for the police and/or the RSPCA to be able to visit/raid puppy farms without advance warning, and for local authorities to do inspections without having to make an appointment. At the moment they all have to make an appointment - and surprise, surprise, find immaculate kennels with half the dogs shipped out for the day. Good breeders won't mind unexpected visits (though they may be irritated if they come too early in the morning!), but a few dawn raids might make the awful ones start looking over their shoulders. And if the raiders found good evidence, the RSPCA could use some of its millions to prosecute them - at the moment it's difficult to find real evidence when the puppy farmer is warned beforehand.

Just a thought,i wonder if it would an idea to also make rules that the public are able to go into kennel areas when choosing a puppy,in a similar vein to KateH's views, that way visiting is unexpected,i believe as it is now the person in charge(for want of a better description) brings a puppy out to the buyer, with the dreadful conditions going on behind locked sheds etc.
