    Default Rupert’s Fund.......In K9 Magazine

Rupert’s Fund…….Pet Owners join the fight to give cavaliers a future.

There is a new scheme for cavaliers that has been organised and funded by pet owners who are members of a cavalier internet forum.
They decided to help the research into the painful inherited condition called syringomyelia ( SM ) by joining together to create a rolling fund to pay for MRI scans for older cavaliers.
Rupert’s Fund, named after a lovely old blenheim dog who suffered from this painful condition for many years, aims to help a genome research project find the genes that cause SM, and to provide information for an Estimated Breeding Values ( EBVs ) programme that will help cavalier breeders choose breeding pairs of dogs that are less likely to produce affected puppies.
The forum members are raising money by compiling a dog recipe book, with donations for memorial pages, by auctioning items on eBay and by selling specially produced toys and cushions. One energetic owner of a SM dog is seeking sponsors while she trains for a Superhero 5km run in London’s Regents Park
Because SM is a progressive condition, finding older cavaliers with no symptoms of syringomyelia is especially important, but any cavalier older than six may prove to be of value to this all important health research.
Rupert’s Fund raised £1500 in just over a month, enough money to pay for eight older cavaliers to be tested, and two eleven year old litter sisters have already been scanned, providing invaluable information to both research projects.
The owner of these two little cavaliers was delighted to have the chance to contribute to the research, and to know more about the health of her elderly dogs.
The researchers would be delighted to hear from anyone with a Kennel Club registered cavalier, over six years of age, that may be suitable for a Rupert’s Fund scan.

    That's great!

I am told that three dogs have now been scanned and another three are identified for scanning asap when there's another scanning day. There is actually funding for NINE dogs at this point I believe so researchers are working to identify further good candidates.

One of the clubs in the UK is planning to also fund one dog later this year, so perhaps any dogs that are not successful in being selected could be put forward by their owners for scanning under Rupert's Fund.
