Hi

I am starting to get a little worried as Molly who is just coming up on 5 months she has always scrathed alot.... more so when she is wearing her harness. Is she to young to be showing signs of MVD? :(
 
I think perhaps you mean Syringomyeila? MVD is Mitral Valve Disease, a heart condition.

Sorry to hear that Molly is scratching - have you visited the vet? The first thing to rule out is parasites of any kind - and then possibly allergies.

If you visit http://cavaliermatters.org/ and http://sm.cavaliertalk.com/ you can learn more about Syringomyelia, on the latter site there is information you can print off to take to your vet if they are not aware of the condition.

The vet is the first step and if they do suspect Syringomyelia, they should refer you to a neurologist, ideally for an MRI scan.

It is unusual for young puppies to be showing symptoms - although puppies under 12 weeks have occasionally been known to show signs. Sadly the younger ones tend to be more severely affected which is why you should seek treatment urgently.

You also need to tell Molly's breeder what is happening - a responsible breeder will want to be informed and should be supportive.

Is Molly insured?

Sorry for the confusion I am a first time cavalier owner I have only had a rescue dog in the past x collie who never suffered any illness she is now with my mum ....Molly was at the vet to get her vacinations and he thought she was in good shape apart from a slight heart murmer.

I have just taken out insurance to make sure should the time come I can offer Molly the best care.

When she was a little younger she would yelp each time I picked her up but that seems to have passed I can rub her neck,head area and apply a little pressure without her yelping. Defo not parasites check her all the time, I think a trip to the vet is in order as her eyes are constantly weeping also.

Watching the clips of the dogs suffering from Syringonmyeila made me so upset so awful on the poor babies.

If you list the area where you live there may be forum members who can recommend vets familiar with cavalier health issues, or specialists nearby.

She is quite young to be showing symptoms, so I would consider allergies as a likely cause, what are you feeding her now?
 
I am in Maynooth...I am thinking of chaging her food to Royal Caine I was feeding her a mixture of home cooking i.e veggie,pasta ect.anddry nuts. I am going to try Royal Caine and see if that make a difference. I was going to change it anyway as she her movements are very soft and she is tiny for her age.

Maybe I am just over worrying knowing the breeder has it in her line of Ruby. Thank you all so much for your help.

OK Karlin uses Fintan Browne - http://www.anicare.ie/You are very wise to have Molly insured - I'm sorry to hear that she has a murmur too, sometimes puppies have innocent flow murmurs which tend to disappear by a year of age, so I'm hoping that it is that.

Sadly Cavaliers do have quite a few health problems, but they are such a wonderful breed that we just cope with whatever comes along...


The yelping could be significant - they can adjust to a level of pain and learn to live with it.

The best thing is to write everything down and take it to the vets with you.

We all stress a little when we think of 'what could happen!' go to vet, if you can get her mri'd and at least then you will know if you have been worried about nothing, or worse case scenario, you get her medicated & monitored :)

I am always worring about things so you are not on your own there!! Keep us dated on the beautiful Molly xx

Yep Fintan is close to me so I will pay him a vist once I have the insurance sorted out....fingers croosed I am worrying about nothing. Thanks for all the advice....I only have her a few months and already she has won me over..I think I am just on really high alert as I know the history now of her breeder.:(
 
There are a lot of other things that can cause scratching - ear problems, as someone has suggested, an allergy (everything from grass to domestic cleaners!), not liking the feel of her harness (is it a bit tight?), food (not necessarily an allergy, but I find a maize-based food makes Oliver very hot and scratchy, so I feed him on a rice-based food such as Burns). With such a young puppy, there are a lot of alternatives to eliminate before you assume SM, even though it is sensible to bear it in mind.

Nicki kindly posted this at the begining of May because I was using Royal Canin and having problems with Dougall (anal glands).

Royal Canin changed their ingredients - the Mini adult food, which used to be quite good, is now very high in Maize :eek:

Ingredients:
Maize, poultry meal, maize flour, maize gluten, animal fat, animal protein (hydrolized), sugar beet pulp, soy oil, yeast, fish oil, minerals, DL-Methionine, sodium triphosphate, L-Lysine, egg powder, L- Carnitin.


In view of Kates comments it might not be a good idea to change to Royal Canin.
While Molly is in the important growing stage I would choose a food that gives her maximum Nutrition. If her stools are soft you might want to get the vet to check her anal glands as these can be a real problem with this breed, especially if their stools are not what they should be.:eek:

I believe they will be delivering in your area soonish.

If you don't fancy feeding raw food rather than choose Royal Canin, I would follow Kates advice and try the Burns for now.

I have changed to James Wellbeloved and it seems to be helping I will try it for afew weeks and she how she does.....she did have a problem with her anal glandes when I first got her vet emptied them so I am hoping that has not returned already....I will keep an eye on her bum dragging!!!:cool:

Our Sophie itches sand scratches like mad when I feed her grain-free kibble, and I think she is allergic to the potato in it. She also scratches like mad from flea bites. I added dried granular garlic to her food (she's already on K9Advantix but it doesn't repel fleas, just kills them after they bite) and I've seen improvement in the scratching. I think it is working on her. Then there is the Bermuda grass she's allergic to . . . but I don't let her walk on those yards if I can help it. So far, she's doing great this year by me keeping her on a raw diet and using the garlic supplement.
