That's interesting Sins, thanks for posting! -- any of our heart experts know what this might have been for, more specifically?

could it be this
A method is presented for permanent catheterization of the aorta and the pulmonary artery in dogs. The preparation of single vessel catheters and double catheters for simultaneous arterial and venous sampling is described. The catheters, made of S-50-HL Tygon tubing, are introduced into the aorta and the pulmonary artery through the omocervical vessels, leaving the cerebral circulation intact. Removal of the catheter by the dog, thrombophlebitis and vascular embolism have not been observed. The catheters have remained functional for up to one year.
Key words Blood sampling - Dog - Permanent intravascular catheterization

This work was supported in part by grants from the Netherlands Organization for the Advancement of Pure Research (Z.W.O.) received through the Foundation for Medical Research (Fungo).

When I re-read the article sounds like patent ductus arteriosis(could have different name in dogs though). This is a fetal conection between the aorta and the pulmonary artery that normally closes after birth.(in humans) Causes the blood to bypass the lungs. In humans, usually corrected surgically when persistant in infants, (open chest and tie off the vessel). Percutaneous a coil (platnium thread) is placed in the vessel via catheter and this causes the vessel to clot off.

This is great that technology can be applied to help dogs. :l*v:
