Splitting capsules?

HELP....Monty was just prescribed gabapentin. The vet gave me 100 mg capsules with instructions to give him 1/2 a capsule daily. How in the heck do you split a capsule???????

I've split capsules in two ways - for pimobendan, I used a compounding pharmacy that actually dumped out the capsules and meticulously divided the contents and recapsuled in smaller caps. They charged me $15 to do this for several hundred caps, so it was quite reasonable.

But I've also opened up a capsule myself and visually poured roughly half of the powder into one half of the capsule so I had two half capsules with approx half the contents in each and then plugged the ends with cheese spread! Over the two day period you will have given the exact amount and it really doesn't matter that much if each dose is slightly off. For longer term, I purchased empty capsules and would open and pour roughly half the contents into a new capsule so that I could close the old and new capsules properly.

Worse than that was splitting a four sided viagra tablet into 12 pieces - the drug is given for pulmonary hypertension. Those pieces were never precise but there were never any consequences.

By the way, that is a very nonstandard dose because it is so low. The drug effect is gone after 8 hours, so giving once a day means that for 16 hours out of 24 the dog has zero effect from the medication.
