• If you're a past member of the board, but can't recall your password any more, you don't need to set up a new account (unless you wish to). As long as you recall your old login name, you can log in with that user name then select 'forgot password' and the board will email you at your registration email, to let you reset your password.

DIY haircut - and clipper recommendations?

We're going to be out of the country for a few weeks over X'mas and New Year's, and will be boarding our Skippy at a local boarding shop. Since he lives in an apartment with us, we're not sure how dirty he'll get when mingling with other dogs on a daily basis. The boarding shop does provide simple baths every few days if necessary, but I'm not sure how good of a job they'll do, especially since he does have a longer coat that most of the other breeds that will be boarded too.

As such, we're interested in giving him a little DIY 'trim', if you will, before we leave. Does anyone have any advice on how to go about it, i.e. techniques and areas to pay attention to? Also, what about clipper/cutter recommendations?

Below is a picture of him, so you have an idea of his coat length/thickness. The picture is from a couple of months ago, so it's a little longer and thicker now. If it helps any, he's just about 1.5 years old now.

I have a poodle which i clip myself, and this year i decided to clip my cavie as well because she gets a little hot. I have oster powermax clippers ==>

i used a number 3 blade http://www.groomers-online.com/product.php/23/-3-oster-blade on her body and left a skirt. then i used a one inch comb on her legs using these http://www.groomers-online.com/product.php/1781/wahl-metal-snap-on-combs--set-of-8 . i also trimmed a bit off her tail, to tidy it up :)

Though i will tell you after you trim cavie hair it takes MONTHS to grow back :/ and dog grooming is very expensive as you can see. So if you did only want a one off trim, i would go to the groomer's. As it is a lot cheaper and the groomer (hopefully) wont mess up or go wrong which can happen with a DIY trim!! But if you do decided to trim Skippy yourself, you can't by cheap clippers as they don't cut through the coat easily and can cause nasty clipper rash :(
