Pet Insurance

Chamberlain

Well-known member
I have noticed that a lot of members on the board advocate for pet insurance. I am very interested and have pretty much made up my mind that I will be getting insurance for Chamberlain because of what happened this weekend.

This weekend while at the dog park my best friends dog (a five month old Australian Sheppard) was playing too rough and must have caused trauma to Chamberlains right eye. Saturday night he was rubbing his eye, we noted it but didn’t think too much about it. When my husband woke up to let the dogs out he noticed Chamberlains eye was red and appeared swollen. We took him to the vets Sunday morning, he had a scratch test done and luckily there was no scratch but we were given ointment and told to follow up in a week. His eye was back to normal by Monday but it was scary! Thankfully the visit “only” cost $80.00. :yikes

I was wondering who everyone has for insurance, what type of premium did you get. Any help would be appreciated!

I am in the US - I have PetPlan as do most of my Cavalier Owning friends with insurance.

It even paid for their dentals that I got done a couple weeks ago. My vet wrote them up as stage 2 periodontal disease and it paid all but my $200 deductible. I have the Bronze plan with $200 deductible and no co-pay.

Can't say enough good things about Pet Plan. I am happy I haven't gotten my money's worth on claims ... means my dogs have been healthy, but it is good to know it is there and will pay out if something bad happens (and the way my dogs like to pick up anything on the ground they see, this is a real fear for me, even as careful as I try to be!)

Totally agree..PetPlan is great!!

I pay $32 a month and have $8,000/year coverage with $100 deductible and 0% coinsurance. Had to use it for the first time in September for an emergency after hours vet visit in which a ton of tests were done and my girl was kept overnight. A month later had another vet visit and a specialist visit with a cardiologist (everything turned out great by the way!). But long story short out of about $2000, I ended up spending about $300 after coverage. The reimbursed me very quickly (about a week). (y)

I have Embrace Pet insurance on both of my doggies. (one cavalier and one mixed breed) I have had a great experience with them so far. Bella (my cav) had to have bilateral knee surgery (due to severe patellar luxation) when she was 18 months old. It was very expensive, almost $3000.00, and we only had to pay $300.00. We had it pre approved to make sure it would be covered. They are very pleasant to work with and like to stay involved in your pets care. I wouldn't own another pet without insurance! Good luck!

Okay, I have to make a decision, so I was wanting to push this to the top to see if there are any other responses.....

I've looked at PetPlan, Embrace and Trupanion. Trupanion I only have a couple more days to sign up for, as they only insure dogs under one year. But, it seems PetPlan was pretty pricey compared to Embrace, BUT, I seem to have a better feeling about Petplan, I don't know why.

I'm curious to know what you all are paying, and what your deductible is, and have you been denied on anything.

Hey, I feel like I have answered this somewhere else on this forum, but here goes my rant... I have Trupanion and love love them so far (trust me I will be the first to complain if something changes) I pay exactly $44.53 ( I just checked my credit card to make sure) for a zero deductible and unlimited lifetime limit (it used to be 20k but they changed it to unlimited) . THey do not pay for any office visit fee or anything routine (shots, general check up ,spay/neuter or dental cleaning). I still have to save and budget for these usually planned visits. However they do pay for 90% of the ACTUAL bill of any test, surgery, illness,or medication due to illness or injury (even MVD and SM stuff) no matter if you see a specialist or your general vet. I also opted for the hip dysplasia coverage so if I didnt it would be about $5 less/month. So far I have had it for about 2 years with no rise in premium. Paid for MRI, spinal tap, dog bite, ear infections, monthly medications for CM. They also pre approved a decompression brain surgery when I was considering it last year (did not end up doing it). It takes about 2-3 weeks for me to get a check when I fax over the claim. For me it provides me with peace of mind knowing that I will never have to consider money when making a decision on my Jack's health. Again, will post if this so far wonderful company ever changes:)

I love trupanion but I have been with them less then a year... I love that they pay 90% of the ACTUAL bill minus the vet visit or any "routine" care. They also offer NO yearly limit, NO illness limit, & NO lifetime limits like some companies. I pay about $35 a month for our pup. I have always gotten my checks in 7-10 days on average. Great customer serious. You can contact them by a chat online, by email or by phone (Which is 24/7). Have not been denied on anything other then vet visits and routine care (vaccines/neuter.) as their policy states.

After reading here at this forum, and doing a bit of other research, I went with PetPlan. Sophie has no health issues, but one can't be too careful with this breed. I chose the "Select" level policy and bought it when she was 10 months old. I paid $280 that time, and 1st renewal almost 5 months ago was $294 and I have made no claims at all. Sophie has been a healthy girl, so far, and I hope I never have to file a claim.

I haven't done it yet, so Trupanion is out now that Claire turned one on Monday, Feb 7th. So, I will probably go with PetPlan. Haven't heard as much about Embrace.

I hate making these decisions, I always second guess myself! Urghhhh!

Fortunately I took out Pet Insurance for Molly and Dougall with Pet Plan, so far I have claimed back about £15,000. The premium is approximately £40.00 per month each. I don't claim they are the best or the cheapest but I have been very pleased with the service so far. In view of the number of health issues Cavaliers have, I would strongly recommend taking out Insurance.

I live in NY so not sure if enrollment is different by state but, my friend has a 2 year old pug she inherited and recently enrolled her in Trupanion. I believe they stopped the one year age limit.

Just wondering why Trupanion is out since she turned one? I recently enrolled 2
adult Cavaliers 2 months ago.

I also have Trupanion for my Lola. We got it when she was 3 months old, and with $0 deductible and hip dysplasia coverage we pay $39/mo. I agree with the others who have posted that I love how there is no life time or annual limit. I also love how the price will never go up with age (the only reason it would go up is if the price of vets in the area go up due to inflation). Trupanion also gave us a free month trial:D. We haven't needed to use it yet, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time before something happens and with insurance we won't hesitate to bring her in at the slightest issue. And, I'm not sure if the vet gets a kick back, but Trupanion was the insurance that they recommended the most.

We did NOT have pet insurance for when my Lab was a puppy and we ended up taking her to 2 different emergency vet visits totaling over $3000 (and no surgery). If I were to do it again and knew what I know now I wouldn't ever get a puppy without insurance, or having at least $5000 on hand for emergencies. Thank goodness we had the spare cash back then or I don't know what we would have done; payment plans?
