A NEW scholarship has been created to develop methods with which to detect and measure chronic pain in dogs.
The investigations will focus on syringomyelia and osteoarthritis, although the assessment methods will be applied eventually to all conditions.
The Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW) has awarded the scholarship to Alastair Cockburn of the University of Bristol who will undertake the three-year programme of research at doctorate level. He will investigate methods of assessing pain, underlying emotional state and quality of life in dogs with chronic pain conditions.
 
That looks like one of the best pieces of news I have heard this year! Thanks so much for posting it, Margaret. Let's hope they can produce some helpful results really quickly and get them out into the wide world where dogs are suffering.
 
That sounds absolutely brilliant - it's what is needed. It is very hard to judge how much pain a dog really has, as in the wild they would hide it so that they would not be showing weakness to other predators or prey animals.

Quite few times I've gently said to friends that their older dog may be having some pain with arthritis - they don't realise when they are with them all the time, are not so aware of the changes - the dog slowing down, getting stiff etc - they are amazed at the difference in the dog when they are finally treated (y)
