Update on ruby

Well the vet just called un expectedly and said that he was really pleased with her until they took her out for wander in the garden.

He said she pasted some very awful looking faeces that he he not happy with at all as they were almost black in colour. At this stage he is certain there is some internal bleeding somewhere much further up in the small intestine.

He said that he doesnt want to anaethetise her today as if there is an ulceration of some sort an anaethetic can make it worse so they are going to put her under tomorrow and use an endoscope to find out what on earth is going on inside.

As you can imagine Im pretty beside myself and the only consolation is that the vet said she is very bright and bouncy and perfectly happy at the momment and has been since she got there!!


I won't here from them again until the morning unless her condition changes so your continued prayers are still very much needed for her!!

Karen, I think I'd still want an ultrasound done today by someone experienced in interpreting ultrasounds. The beauty of an ultrasound is that it is totally noninvasive and anesthesia is not necessary so there is absolutely NO harm that can come from it. It might yield some valuable information, and the worst case scenario would be that it didn't reveal anything obviously abnormal (which would be somewhat of a relief). As I mentioned before, after Anne's experience with Ella, I have become less and less willing to wait when there is anything amiss. Within the past year, two of my dogs had abdominal ultrasounds and I was allowed to be present. It is very easy on them and it was amazing what all could be visualized and "examined." In both cases, we wanted to look at kidneys, but we were able to get a good look at all abdominal organs.

If needed, do you have access to any specialty vets? Where I am located, only board certified specialists would do an endoscopy - they tend to have the best equipment and they are experienced so can more often give a better interpretation/diagnosis. I realize that not everyone has the resources that I have since I am in a big city where we have every specialist imaginable and two vet schools within easy driving distance. I can tell you that advanced testing done by a specialist is much more valuable than one done by a GP vet - GP vets are great (mine is a very close friend) but they just generally don't have the experience and training of a specialist.

We're all thinking of you and Ruby and poor Charlie too.

Forgot to say - the bright and bouncy attitude is a GREAT sign so that also makes me less worried than if she was hiding or obviously in pain with a tender abdomen.........

Thats the thing that makes this all so strange! She had absolutely NO tenderness in her abdomen and hasn't since day one of this situation. I had a read back over Anne's posts about Ella, not to upset myself - although it did- but to see what had happened and although a lot of it is very very similer, the big difference is that Ruby isn't in any pain with this.

She is very good at letting me know when she is hurting but since Tuesday morning she has been really happy and wanting to eat. No- she hasn't much excersice tolerence but that is understandable considering she wouldn't have eaten and probably has no energy. But her gereral demeanor is good and the vet keeps saying that she's bouncing off the walls of her cage!

I'm trying to make myself feel better by looking at the positives but Ella is at the back of my mind for sure xx

Me too. Sometimes I wish I got ultrasound earlier. The main difference is that ella was definitely not happy. I got some updates but when I visited her She was not ok.

The similarities is that they found no sensitivty when they put pressure on abdomen which made them think it was not an obstruction. Xrays saw nothing (although I think I remember specialist internist thinking something). Bloodwork did not show anything abnormal except I think white blood cells (can't remember) but nothing to suggest pancreatis but they said rarely pick up with bloodwork.

Not to scare you, but like Pat said best case they find nothing.

I am just praying that all these issues will amount to nothing, and she will be home soon, well.My brothers Labradoodle went though some issues last Fall, and after lots of tests and ultrasound etc, they finally opted for exploratory surgery and found NOTHING. They were allin shock.Keep the faith, okay?

Thanks Anne,

Spoke to our Vet this morning.

He said that everything was going on today, they are going to put her under GA and do more X-rays, the Ultra Sound and also put the Endoscope in!

She was sick again at 1am (only small amount) but no more diarhorea since yesterday morning.

So I should no more by around 4pm today! Can't say I've slept much since Sunday.........

Karen, I am really feeling for you and Charlie. I can't imagine how anxious you must be feeling. All paws are crossed for Ruby :hug:

I was hoping it was all good news and she was going home to you. But it does sound like she is moving in a good direction. Continued prayers for you and Ruby.

WellI ts been a very long day- not helped by the fact that I had to work this evening, but the vet called me at 5pm and in short here's what has happened......

At some point in the last week something has passed through her system causing a small tear in her small intestine- not enough to lacerate completely but enough to cause the small bleed. The endo scope showed massive swelling at the point of the tear which the vet said is caused by her white blood cells all rushing in to fight the infection. He did say that it is no longer bleeding internally which is a good sign and that they now need to treat the infection and the swelling.
So she will stay in for a few more days until she can eat normally and pass normal faeces aswell.


So all in all definatly not the worst case scenario- she is still really bright and happy and I have decided to go and see her in the morning. I wasn't going to as I didnt want to make her think she was going home but I can't wait another 3-4 days to see my little baby.

Thank you all so so much for your kind words, prayers and guidance through these last few days. It has been more help than you can all know..... I for one am looking forward to bringing my little angel home and im certain that Charlie is looking forward to seeing his Big sis again soon!!!

Well I'm sorry but happy if that makes sense! I'm so glad they were able to find what was happening and it can be treated. I know you want ruby home now but I'm just so glad Ruby WILL be coming home and is happy!! I've been thinking of you all day and checking. Get some sleep b/c I know you have been so worried

Glad to know that Ruby is getting treated and will soon be home. Bring her a special treat tomorrow when you see her.

I am with everyone...I am sorry, but happy too. As long as there is something they can do, great. But so sorry you and her have to even go through any of this!!! I will send my continued prayers your way, and try to get some sleep...she will need you rested and ready to go when she comes home!
