Update on Gracie's symptoms... Time for neurologist

VIDEO ADDED Update on Gracie's symptoms

Gracie has been clearly better since being treated for ear infection and allergies. There has been less head shaking and scratching, especially on lead. So i do think this was a contributing factor but not entire story. I did take her to a Cavalier meet up today where I had two people observe her who have personal experience with SM and one is a breeder. They are a bit concerned by how she walked generally and how much she scratched when she first arrived and was so excited to see a room of Cavaliers. None of the other Cavaliers in the room scratched nearly as much, except one poor fellow wearing a cone to protect stitches. Her symptoms got better today when I removed her harness and as she calmed down, but I know in my heart that it is time to go to a neurologist. I called the pet insurance company and they will pay 80% of specialist and MRI. Thank goodness for that relief!! I have the name of recommended neurologist at North Carolina Vet School, which is a great resource. So.... This is our battle plan for the next week or so. I do not yet see evidence of pain but hope I can help her avoid it as much as possible by taking action now. I am so very grateful for those of you here who will be here for us in this difficult journey. kinda just ready to get on with it...

NEW VIDEO: Does not show her air scratching on walks, but other symptoms captured well.

Will try to get video clips....

I know we need it but need another person to help me catch her doing it....not alway predictable. She has not done much of it lately on general walks. When I have it, I will post it.

I'm sorry to hear this. This is how I felt about Shelby. I knew something wasn't right and, in my heart, I knew it was SM. I wouldn't have known about it if it weren't for this board. And the connections, resources and insight I received here were invaluable. I will say that I was somewhat relieved when the MRI was done. It did confirm what I suspected but it also gave me a clear picture of exactly what was going on. I have Petplan insurance and they were amazing for the MRI process, no hassles at all. Good luck.

Sorry to hear this Debra. The uncertainty of not having a definite diagnosis is hard. But I know you'll do everything you can for her. You're a good mom. Please keep us updated.

It does seem you have reached a stage where you need to know, not only for Gracie's sake but also for your own peace of mind.

I will keep my fingers crossed for you both.

I'm thinking about you and gracie, debra. I think a visit to the neurologist will hopefully give you answers you need.

We missed you today Anniemac!

Thank you for the lead on Dr. Olby. Many others are recommending her too. I know she will take good care of Gracie. But very sorry you did not make it to the meeting today as Gracie got TWO boyfriends and she was counting on Elton getting first shot!

Should have a neurology appointment soon...

Looks like local university vet school hospital has too many problems... major neurologists out on maternity or other extended leave. So going to a specialty clinic recommended by several here. Will update later!

I'm sorry to hear about your lovely pup! I hope all goes well! We just had an MRI this week and they added in a spinal tap - which I was pleased to hear is way less painful for pups! It's definitely tough, but good to know for sure what is up!
