Very worried for Daisy.

Sins you mention Daisy's eyes blinking, is this proper blinking or the eye flicking from side to side (diagonally) called nystagmus? The one feature I have noticed in my two with EF is that their eyes are usually wide and staring. I have seen nystagmus in one of mine who had a vestibular attack, also one who had something similar and ended up with a head tilt. This was in the 90's and the first time I had seen anything like this in my cavaliers.

Hi Ruth,
It was Nystagmus. I was very careful to note the type of eye movement. Her limbs were not rigid either like the videos I've seen of EF.I was contacted privately last night by a breeder who suggested a vestibular episode as one of hers had it.
Basically, she got out of her basket and behaved like a dog on an ice rink, all four limbs uncoordinated and flailing. As she slowly recovered, she would walk ,and her hind legs wobble and she'd fall over to the side. The trembling was confined to her head and neck area, not below the shoulders. The whole thing lasted about 30 mins to full recovery.
I don't know what could have prompted it.(certainly not exercise)..
She had been sore all week and she'd been vomiting on and off.
I'll still do the EF test and have it excluded as a cause and will hopefully have this information for the specialist.

Hi Sins

We are so lucky to have people like Ruth ,what happens now to Daisy whats the next step.

Hi Brian,
The plan is firstly to order my test kit from the AHT.
There's a particular vet I want to see at our local surgery who looks after her,so an evening appointment with him to ask for a referral to the veterinary hospital in Cork city.
Then we sit and wait for the results from AHT and for an appointment with the specialist.I think he only comes over from Edinburgh every few weeks,so things may not happen quickly.
Again, she's fine today, holding a vigil by the fridge when I left, and had been out snuffling around the garden with the other two at 7am.She's not exactly sound on the front right leg,but that's not unusual.

Sins, thanks for your reply. Certainly the nystagmus would point more to a vestibular type attack to me. Never seen that at all in the EF attacks my boys have had. As I mentioned before, back in the early 90's I had two with facial paralysis and one of them had nystagmus, very badly, and was left with a head tilt. As I had never heard of this before in cavaliers I felt I was a bad owner!! not one with this problem, but two!! The one with nystagmus went on to get facial paralysis on the other side too and eventually his muscles atrophied leaving him with a rather cross expression.

Hope Daisy doesn't have EF, but good on you for testing. It is a horrible disease and every opportunity must be taken to eradicate it in my opinion. My two were involved in the initial research with Dr Penderis. Good luck and gentle hugs for Daisy.

Riley has short vestibular events coupled with nystagmus several times a week. Oddly enough hers never occurs while she is upright or walking, only when she is lying down. Her body will curve into a backwards C and her head will whip backwards. They typically last for about 30 seconds and then it takes her about another 30 seconds to recuperate and then it's like nothing ever happened. She does have other vestibular events without nystagmus in which she will do what Daisy did, just collapse and try to get up, but have difficulty doing it. For Riley though it is definitely related to her SM and without her daily prednisone, she would not be walking. Let us know what you find out from your visit. Good luck.

hi
so sorry to read about daisy i hope she will be ok please give her a kiss and cuddle from me a louie

Hi Sinead, sorry, I'm only just seeing this for the first time. Poor Daisy and poor you, that must have been so scary. How is Daisy today?

Oh well, usual vet wasn't there this evening...
But referral has been made to the neurologist,so that's good.
She had a thorough check up and her sweet little heart is just fine. She has two inflamed ears although very clean, they appear red so she got easotic ear drops.
She got a shot of metacam which works for approx 72 hours and a long acting antibiotic as she has abdominal tenderness on her left side and a slightly raised temperature.
She's snoozing contentedly on hubby's fleece jacket on the recliner and I haven't the heart to move her.

Oh bless her.
Wonder how much her ear 'problem' influenced her balance and possibly the vomiting ? (just thinking about a vertigo attack I had due to an ear problem, I couldn't walk in a straight line and threw and threw).
Anyway, glad she has the referral and some medication to help in the meantime.

It's good that you have the referral sorted, I agree with Ruth, ear problems may have aggravated things [sorry you had vertigo Ruth that's horrid] . It sounds like she maybe has a few things going on poor wee soul :(

I hope the antibiotics and pain killers help and she feels much better over the weekend.

I'm afraid it's not very good news.
The vet telephoned with some news about her blood tests. The reason for her seizures is a build up of toxins in the bloodstream. She has pancreatitis and liver damage.
It seems to be caused by infection or something more sinister. She's starting a liver support diet and some meds to tide her over until we can get an ultrasound done.
She's not come through the sedation and tests as well as we'd hoped.Vet is absolutely lovely, but didn't sound very optimistic.
