MRI grading

Went to the health desk at Crufts yesterday, which was highlighting the various BVA/KC schemes. They've produced good and comprehensive A4 four-page information sheets for them, and the CM/SM one includes a list of all the new grades and a list of which grade dog at which age can be mated to which other grade of dog. For those of you who haven't met them, the grades are as follows:

Chiari Malformation:
Grade 0 No Chiari malformation
Grade 1 Cerebellum indented (not rounded)
Grade 2 Cerebellum impacted into, or herniated through the opening at the rear of the skull (the foramen magnum).

Syringomyelia
Grade 0 Normal (no central canal dilation, no presyrinx, no syrinx)
Grade 1 Central canal dilation less than 2mm in diameter
Grade 2 Syringomyelia (central canal dilation which as an internal diameter of 2mm or greater), or separate syrinx, or pre-syrinx with or without central canal dilation.

The grade is qualified with a letter indicating the age group at the time of scanning as follows: a = more than 5 years of age; b = three to five years of age; c = one to three years of age. As SM is a progressive disease the grade is not valid without the qualifying letter.

The leaflet also has pictures of scans showing what the different grades look like. I thought it was a very good leaflet, with lots of other information for people wanting to scan.

Very helpful reminder on the new grading scheme and great to know it is illustrated too! That will be useful for breeders and pet owners who want to understand the scheme and condition better.
