Hacking cough.

Bella has a terrible cough and some sneezing. We originally thought it was kennel cough but after antibiotics she still had it, (this was about 2 1/2 months ago. Then the vet said it was because she was teething. I took her back to the vet and he said she has allergies that cause the cough so I gave her Periactin and it didn't help. Now I am giving her Clarantine and there has been a minor improvement. Does anyone else give antihistamines to their dog? What has worked for you?

Hey love! Long time no chat! I am at a course in Queensland (been here for two weeks) and here for another week....but anyway, I have given Brooky antihistamines. I did an antihistamine trail of about 5, because each dog reacts to each one differently (so some might work, some might not). Claratine had a minor improvement for me too, and Telfast actually worked the best for us (but every dog is different)...I have the dose for a cavvie at home, not here though. I have not heard much about coughs and allergies though, did he say why he thought it was allergies? Is her cough phlegm like or dry? Chesty or in the throat?

Don't have too much advice here. Anti-histamines made Brooky tied, but the Telfast did not. I stopped using them though because the improvement was not huge and I am a bit anti-meds (now use more herbs/essential oils etc....but I only know they kinda that relive scratching not coughing).

Is there anything in the atmosphere in your neighbourhood that has changed - increased air pollution, long-term exterior painting you walk near, someone regularly burning garden rubbish? Aled came from the Welsh countryside (we presume) - clean air, no contact with traffic. When he met our busy city main road, he coughed for a week until his body adjusted to the pollution. It wasn't really an allergy - just the body making sure nothing nasty got in, until he got used to it and the body said 'OK, this level of pollution isn't going to do any damage' - and the cough switched off like a tap! Which probably doesn't help Bella at all! But hope you find the cause and can treat it.

I think after this time I would actually want to investigate this further rather than just keep trying different meds - the vet doesn't seem too sure what is going on. Perhaps ask for a referral to a specialist?

It might be worth trying to see a holistic vet - they will try to identify why this happening rather than just treating the symptoms.

I completely agree....it's time to look into other causes. coughing for 2 1/2 months is really too long. Has the vet done chest xrays? This may be a good starting point. Hope you can get to the bottom of this and Bella fells better soon.

Jessie often has a seal like bark after he's been drinking his water too fast, especially after a long tiring play. Is it common to adminsiter medication to pets that is made for humans? Jessie has allergies too, but mainly sneezing fits and clear puppy snot. How did you know how much of a dosage to give her, or is that something you check with the vet first?
