SM Questions

Hi Everyone...I know I have only posted an intro a couple of months ago but I have some questions about SM...Heidi is 14.5 months old and a couple of months ago she went off her food and was screaming at different times...I took her to the vet and the vet could not find anything wrong...He decided it was gas...Next day she was fine, until today...SHe jumped up on the couch and screamed, she followed me into the kitchen and started screaming alot and she had her body stretched out and stopped walking....SHe did not eat this morning and threw up 3 times...She is face rubbing and when I touch her ear she acts as if something is wrong with it...My question is this...Do they go off their food for a day and does the screaming stay continual or does it stop?...Thanks Cavi and Heidi

I'm sorry to hear this, and sadly it sounds like your vet is not up to speed with SM. This sounds like pain episodes, it would be very unusual for a dog to scream due to gas! I am actually quite shocked your vet said that, and personally would lose faith in them totally.

Anyone who is in a lot of pain will not want to eat, dogs in particular will often then go and eat grass and then vomit.

Is Heidi under the care of a neurologist? She needs to have her pain management looked at, ideally by a neurologist. Look at http://www.veterinary-neurologist.co.uk/ and print off the info for vets and the treatment algorithm, http://sm.cavaliertalk.com/ and http://cavaliermatters.org/ will also help.

Please contact a vet urgently, and come back and tell us how Heidi is doing.
