Dynamic airway disease.

Bella has had a cough for about 2 months now. She was on a dose of antibiotics and it went away for about a week and then came back. She went on a different dose of antibiotic drug and it did nothing. The vet thinks it is dynamic airway disease. Its out common in Cavaliers? I think she may be jumping the gun a bit. Do you think I should get a second opinion first?

I don't know anything about dynamic airway disease, but I think it never hurts to get a second opinion if you feel uncertain about the diagnosis. I hope Bella starts feeling better soon. Sonny sends hugs. :hug:
 
I have never heard it called Dynamic Airway Disease, but have heard of BAOS (the link posted above) and know several Cavaliers who had it.

The breed is definitely pre-disposed to it. Hopefully it turns out to be something simpler to treat.

What is your vet recommending for treatment?

Cavaliers can have airway disorders, but I've never heard of "dynamic airway disease". The general term used to identify the airway disorders of cavaliers is "brachycephalic airway obstruction syndrome" or BAOS. I don't think a cough is a common symptom of any of the categories of BAOS.

I would have a specialist examine Bella. That would be an ear-nose-throat specialist. That would be a board certified veterinary small animal internal medicine specialist. You may find them in the US and Canada at http://www.acvim.org/websites/acvim/index.php?p=3

Oops! Can't say that link would work for Australia, but I guess you get the idea.

The vet said she thinks her trachea collapses, however why would it suddenly start two months ago. She doesn't have any symptoms listed on that site, she heaves then coughs then gags and sometimes she sneezes. If is was this disease the vet said why would it stop for a week after the first dose of antibiotics. I am thinking kennel cough and the first dose of antibiotics worked but wasn't a long enough course.

Also the vet thought it may be allergies, however we tried a few different anti-histamines and none worked.

Heaving, coughing, gagging and then sneezing almost sounds like a sinus infection that is draining down the back of her throat, vs. out her nose. Sinus infections can be difficult to treat, even with oral antibiotics, so IMHO, I would ask for a longer round of the antibiotic that was working and a second opinion. Hope she's feeling better soon!

Oh and another thing, she has swollen glands just below her jaw/neck....sounds like an infection to me too.
