Left Alone

My wife and I do work but are "building" a safe indoor/outdoor area and mid day visits to break up any time spent alone, this will be when the puppy is older and not straight away.

Do you think our new Cav will be ok ? ..... keep getting mixed responses to this question even from breeders.

You will find that Cavvie lovers will tell you that they do not like to be alone. They were bred to be companions after all. I wanted to bring home a rescue once and was turned down because no human would be in the house during the day--only another dog. My plan had been to provide her company! However, my Tess is fine home alone for long periods of time. I know it's not ideal, but she sleeps when we're gone, and greets us happily when we come home. We brought home a puppy last summer (Golden) and I've always had the impression (very subjective of course) that she would have been just fine being left home alone forever--she could do without the other dog quite nicely, thank you!

IMO, if you are going to be home while the dog is very little to socialize and train her, and are making sure she's safe when you leave her home alone, that your dog will be fine. Although, after you get one Cav, you are going to want another! So that might solve the problem. :D

Hi

If you both work then Cavaliers might not be your breed and if you are after a quality healthy puppy then you may find that all of the
good breeders will refuse you .I work but my wife does not and the girls are alone once a week when my Dawn does the weekly Sainsbury
visit, and when I am home I have sixteen paws following me everywhere and that is part of the contract between you and your Cavalier
which makes them such a special breed as everything has to be two way .

Cavaliers do love to be "with" you all the time.
Again....my opinion here...but have you thought about maybe getting 2 dogs since you & your wife both work?
( I'm not saying 2 puppies necessarily)? Maybe an older dog to be w/ the pup?
My husband and I are huge advocates of having 2 dogs at a time. We have always done this...and it wasn't any more difficult than only one.
I am home all the time now...but when I was working..they kept each other company.
ANY dog gets lonely ..as they are pack animals.

what if its company isnt another dog...but two cats?

oliver was raised with three cats (well and totally different circumstances) ...he himself thought he was part cat im SURE.
but my new pup will be living with two cats. i guess in my other topic i forgot to mention that..lol
