Toby, the escapee patella recovery patient
Oh my gosh...I just got home and Toby and Brooky have escaped the pen I have them in for Toby's patella recovery - and I found them asleep on the couch (meaning Toby walked up and down stairs and JUMPED up on the couch!!)...and my dried starfish in the living room has been EATEN!
This has never happened before. And I freaking about Toby's knee as he is supposed to be on crate rest (no running, jumping or stairs)! He is 4 weeks post opp now, but still supposed to be rested until 6 weeks....anyone ever had this happen after patella surgery? I wonder if he did something to his knee...we have come so far. He does not seem to be walking any different, maybe a bit more ginger, but who knows what could happen on the inside.
And already called the vet on the star fish, we are just waiting for who gets sick to find out the culprit and hope this wont lead to an obstruction or gut issue And my two always are left alone free ranging (with bedroom doors/office doors shut etc) in the house and never in nearly 3 years have we had an issue with them touching anything. Ugh.
I feel horrible about Toby - so much guilt if he hurt or messed up something...how did this happen after 4 weeks of recovery perfection with Toby?! I will just die if he has messed up the surgery
Feeling gutted and so worried. He has x-rays in a week and 2 days from now as his final x-rays, otherwise not sure.

What a scary episode! I am sure this one episode so many weeks after his surgery will not have too much of an impact on his healing -- fingers crossed. Also I hope the starfish will end up just passing through or coming back up as some extra roughage and not cause any problems -- but the wait will be nerve-wracking. I don't think they are poisonous at all. I guess the smell would be interesting to a dog and they must look like a chew toy!
I suppose the good thing is you know the pen is not secure now -- often they can jump anything under 4 feet or scramble onto a windowledge, say, if the pen is up against the wall by a window. My Jaspar generally will stay in a pen with the others, but I know he can jump them. The others are too small and far less athletic.
I guess that couch was just too appealing -- so typical for cavaliers to aim for the couch!
Please keep us updated abut the starfish.

Thanks Karlin. Hard to tell with his knee, but we will see!
The starfish however made it's grand debut around 5pm with massive (unlike anything i have ever seen!) white, foamy, starfishy diarrhea that lasted all night long. Poor boy! It has since subsided and he seems just fine...eating rice and chicken as we speak. Doubtful he has learned his lesson, so I am saying so long starfish in my house forever! I live on the ocean in Sydney and my vet says because so many people use these as decoration around here - it is actually a common problem - dogs love them! Who knew.
We go see the specialist about his knee in a week, he said to just wait until then as it is 1.5 hours away and doesn't appear an emergancy...so we will have an x-ray and things then anyway and he can check everything out. Whew! What a weekend

My dog had patella surgery (pins and wire) 10 days ago on both knees and it is so hard to keep him resting I admire you for surviving so many weeks with no mishaps.
