What a great picture. He does look a lot like Hoss doesn't he. Any idea who the people and the dog are or when and where it was taken? I just love those old photos and have been known to browse them at boot and antique sales, just for the pleasure of looking at them. History is a precious thing, to be preserved at all costs.

I wonder if it really is that old?

Some photographers do offer people the chance to pose for mock-up of old photos. The Lady's short hairstyle and the carefully trimmed cavalier do make me wonder if it is authentic.

I collect old postcards and you can get some interesting photos of toy spaniels with well known actresses of the day. I'll put some up later.

I agree with Margaret. I might be risking my reputation as a historian here, and I'm sorry, James, but I don't think it is that old. It's in the detail ;)
Getting your picture taken in the late 19th-early 20th century was rather expensive. Even though they look posh, the clothes don't fit them. The lady's hairstyle is too short, as Margaret points out, the fashion was long hair, no matter your age. Another thing about the lady, she would never hold her fan like that. Either it should be closed, or if open, she would never touch anything but the handle.
If you look at the men's clothes, it is too big for them. Rich people wouldn't have allowed that lack of fashion judgement ;)
Another thing, and that might be far fetched, is the ways the guns are pointing. One of the men has to be right-handed, the other left-handed, otherwise the guns would point the same way - you know, when you reach for it. As it is now it looks staged, like the guns have to point in different directions in order to "frame" the woman in the centre.
But I do like the Cavalier :)

Found out, Yes the smart Cavalier is my Ben, I am the hoss like chap, it was taken when on holiday in Whitby North Yorks waaaay back in August in a shop specialising in Victorian style photographs, I choose the confederate uniforms because they mostly had English uniforms and I am Scottish. It was very busy and a couple with a pair of Cavaliers had their photos taken before us. I have been told that as officers we should have not had guns at all or they would have been holstered out of sight but not stuffed in our waistband.

Ha, ha, James - well done! I totally fell for it thinking that I might hurt your feelings, when I wrote about my reservations as regards the historic details ;)
And knowing a thing or two about English/Scottish history I do understand your concerns about being in an English uniform :D
Merry Christmas!

You are very funny James!! I thought you really thought it was an old pic too. LOL

You got me going on that one too James. Well done.

Most photo editing programmes have a colour to sepia facility. Many backgrounds can be made to look like parchment too. I teach IT one day a week and we have been layering photos and backgrounds to make greetings cards. Some of them are amazing.

We went to Whitby Yorkshire as usual earlier this year, went into that same shop in the old town and came out with this

Ben is staring at the photographer who for some strange reason has stolen his treat. He wants it back.

It was taken in the Victorian Image in Whitby North Yorkshire
