Default New Baby - Teddy, our beautiful Ruby Boy.

We have decided to adopt another little King Charles Cavalier. His name is Teddy, he is a puppy (8 weeks on Tuesday) a little boy and a very pretty Ruby.

We thought about it and discussed it with friends, and family, and without a doubt one of the first things than anyone who had a dog said was "I know this isn't probably the right time to say this but if you are going to get another, then try and get one sooner than later as soon as you are ready".

The empty space left by our beautiful little girl just seems to get bigger and bigger. Every day there are new 'firsts' to get through, without her, and not having a little soul to look after, seemed so wrong. Although we miss Megan so much, knowing that Teddy will be with us in a week, has given us a new lease of life, a focus and given us the chance to think forward again.

He comes from a very reputable and highly recommended breeder. He is one of three pups, and we have been able to watch him on 24 hour webcam since we first found him. We have visited him twice, and going again tomorrow. He is a KC pedigree, with a recorded four generation history, and won't be able to come home until the end of next week after his vet visit and injections. He is already potty pad trained, and used to being in a crate, so our initial training hopefully may be a little easier than a pup who isn't. We don't intend to keep him in a crate forever, but I think its a good idea for him to have a safe place/bed/cave during his youth.

Very Daunting to have a puppy as megan was 4 years old when she arrived, and such a good little girl from the start, but again, becoming new parents will be a treat for us, and learning how to bring up a good little boy is something we both look forward to.

We also thought that a ruby boy would be sufficiently different enough from Megan so that we weren't constantly looking for her, in him. He will have his own personality, quirks and can be a little character all of his own.

I look forward to sharing little Teddys adventures with everyone at Cavalier Talk - where undoubtedly I will have questions to ask every single day (and possibly night).

I will get Richard to show me how to add images, so that I can share him with you all. We have a couple of pics already, a bit blurry but the first of millions I imagine.

Congratulations on finding your new little boy. I can imagine how excited you are.

Just a little word of caution. As you have probably realised from being on this forum there are a lot of health problems in this lovely breed, so you do need to be careful when buying a puppy.

As well as saying they will get your puppy vet checked and vaccinated, I'm sure that your breeder will have shown you the parent's eye, heart and MRI certificates to prove that they were health tested before being mated.
All reputable breeders will do these tests.

    Hi Margaret,
Yes, we were very careful to ensure that we saw those. Rather than get overwhelmed by spending time with Teddy, we agreed that when there I would do the bonding, whilst Richard would look at the paperwork. That way we wouldnt miss anything. They were very good, everything was brought out to show us without asking.

    Hello Lynne,

That was such a wise agreement. Well done.

I am really delighted for you. It is so good to know that you have found genuinely caring breeders. I would imagine they too will be pleased that their puppy is going to someone that really appreciates how lucky they are to find such a responsibly bred pet.

You will be wonderful owners, that is a very fortunate little dog to have been chosen by you.

I am looking forward to seeing lots of photos.

Thank you Margaret. We are so lucky that we can watch him on webcam all the time too. I was watching him at midnight yesterday. It is nice to find a breeder who knows exactly who their puppies have gone to, and are able to put us in touch with his family. We know one of his older half brothers has gone to a couple who run a pub/guesthouse in Whitby, so I imagine we shall be going to the coast for visits, it would be rude not to

Speaking of which, would 8.5 months be too young to be taken away 'on holiday'? We have a week booked in Northumberland - a dog friendly cottage (from when we had Megan), and Im wondering whether or not to cancel it. Obviously we would have to be careful with him, but by that time he would be fully vac'd, 'bitless', and hopefully half decently house trained.

Not the best pictures as they were taken on my very old mobile, as Richard had left his super amazing everything but a phone call gadget in the car.

It should be fine to take him away any time after he has had all his vaccinations.

Cavaliers are very adaptable little dogs ( as long as they have been sensibly socialised from the start ) and they are happy as long as they are with their owners.

Belly bands are a useful aid to prevent housetraining accidents when you are first arrive at a new place.

Lynne, I'm very happy that you have another Cavalier to love. You and Richard are wonderful owners, and Teddy is a lucky pup! I have dearly loved all of my Cavaliers (7 girls and 5 boys over 25 years), but I must say that I do prefer the boys.

So happy for you. Teddy is a cutie for sure. I totally understand what you mean about wanting a different color than Megan. We felt the same way when Sydney died and knew having another Blenheim in the house would be much too painful. So we brought home our little ruby girl, BellaMia. Our hearts still ache for Sydney, and probably always will, but BellaMia has her own personality and has brought so much joy back into the house. We love her to bits.

Can't wait to see more pictures of your little one!
