Sneezing - ALOT!

For past few days, BellaMia has been sneezing a lot. When she first gets up in the morning, she sneezes about 15 times in a row. This morning, I counted her sneezes, and for the first 2 hours she was up she sneezed 30 times! It continues like this all day. I'be given her an antihistamine but it doesn't seem to help.

I haven't changed her food or any household cleaners, detergent, hand cream, etc. Her nose isn't runny. Just wondering if it would be an air borne allergy.

I called the vet office and spoke to one of the vet techs as the vet was unavailable. She thought it could possibly be something stuck in her nose. She booked BellaMia in for tomorrow for the vet to check it out, but says she needs to have general anesthesia. I'm not really comfortable with that.

Anyone have any ideas?

The only time any of mine sneezed like that was when Madison had a VERY long piece of grass she had eaten that for some reason was trying to work it's way out of her nose. She sneezed and sneezed for two days. Before we got to the vet, her sneezes had turned bloody, so what was a regular vet visit turned into an emergency. The vet looked into her nose, took a hemostat and pulled out a 15 inch long piece of grass! Sneezing and bleeding immediately stopped - problem solved! I hope Bella Mia's sneezing is as easy to cure. Now, did Madison learn her lesson? No! She still eats the long grass with the sharp edges to this day. Good luck tomorrow. Let us know what the vet says.

Sparky went through this in the fall for a couple of months and for part of that time his nose was running (just clear liquid). I didn't know of anything that changed and it went away as quickly as it started..

We did anti-histamines, then antibiotics. None seemed to help, but just as I was getting ready to call the vet to schedule a rhinoscopy, I noticed he'd stopped sneezing.

The vet told me dogs can develop nasal allergies/irritation (rhinitis), although it is not very common. I guess that is what it was for us. But you could have a bit of fox-tail, or a plant in his passages so you probably will want to have the vet look at it. I think your vet will want to examine first and treat conservatively before the anesthesia and rhinoscopy and I'd book a specialist for that if it comes to it.

Good luck & keep us posted.

It could be foxtail stuck in her nose. Those things are nasty and cause alot of trouble. I hope the vet can find out what is causing the discomfort and cure her sneezing.

Yes, foxtails are the concern. Other than the sneezing she is absolutely normal. We have a morning appointment for the vet to give her a good examination. Hopefully this will be something easily fixed and she won't need anesthesia. One thing is for certain, she's not going to like missing breakfast tomorrow morning!

I don't mean to make light of BellaMia's issue but this reminds me of Mr. Monster he wakes up and sneezes. He gets upset when I call him a sneeze machine LOL

Please keep us posted on what the vet says. If you haven't already, you might want to video it for her on your phone if you catch it happening. My dogs tend to have this horrible habit of acting absolutely normal when we go to the vet so videos have helped us a lot more than once. :)

Well, we're back from the vet. Of course, she wouldn't sneeze there. We tried to make her sneeze by blowing in her face, but no sneeze. The vet thought that since she wouldn't/couldn't/didn't have to sneeze, that maybe her nose is clear. She also gave her ears a good look, and they are perfectly fine. So rather than put her through anesthesia and a scope, we're treating with antibiotics and antihistamine for a week. If this doesn't solve the problem, we may have to do the scope. Fingers crossed it doesn't come to that.

Fingers crossed!! My sister is going through the exact same thing with her dog now. He does this weird wheezing thing lasts for a minute that the vet thinks is a sneeze (based on our video). He is getting a two week course of both antibiotics & antihistamine and then scope if that does not get it to stop.

It's times like this you really wish they could talk to you
