I'm very sorry to say that it has become increasingly difficult to manage Lauren's pain from CM/SM, so to save her from further suffering, she is to be given her wings tomorrow morning.

Lauren has the Chiari malformation and syrinxes the length of her spine; we have consulted extensively with her vets and pain management specialist at Glasgow Small Animal Hospital who have been brilliant as partners in her care and in managing her issues over the last few years. Lauren's condition is believed to have been exacerbated by our exposure to chronic carbon monoxide poisoning over a period of several years :(

From the moment she was born, just over 4 1/2 years ago, I knew she would be stopping with us - I had really wanted a Tricolour girl. She has been so very special to me from the moment of her birth. It took a long time for my husband to bond with her, but she eventually worked her magic on him too. We are both devastated at losing our beautiful, precious girl. It is the hardest decision to make but the most loving one.

A couple of favourite photos:

Lauren is going through the Cavalier collection scheme to assist research into Syringomyelia, Chronic Pancreatitis & Diabetes Mellitus in dogs and Mitral Valve Disease. http://www.thecavaliercollectionscheme.org

A huge thank you to Margaret Carter and researcher Penny Knowler for making the arrangements, it was complicated due to our geographic location, but we all persevered.

All Cavaliers are valuable for the scheme, but those whom have been MRI'd are particularly valuable.

I know none of us like to think about the possibility of ever losing our beloved companions, it just hurts too much, but by giving this gift of love, something positive can come out of your loss.

So distressed to see that yet another of our precious Cavaliers has reached the end of the road. Looking at Rebel during the past few days with the extremes of air pressure has brought home to me what a truly horrible disease SM in particular is, but of course Lauren has had so many other issues to cope with too. I am so sorry.

How sensible you are to donate her to the Cavalier Collection Scheme. I did not know it was operating, so will look up the details for when Rebel's time comes. We need every piece of information that can be obtained because one day it will all make perfect sense.

You and Lauren will be in my thoughts tomorrow Nicki. What a beautiful dog she was before illness took over. You must have been so proud of her and will cherish all the happy memories.

Oh no, I can't believe it....….I am so sorry to read this sad news. To say goodbye to another young dog just isn't fair. I will certainly keep you in my thoughts and prayers. You are giving Lauren the ultimate gift of love. I'm so sorry it has come to this.

So so sorry to hear that you've had to make the decision to give Lauren her wings. Truly heart breaking to read your posting, and having to make this decision when she's at such a young age. A brave and courageous choice and words cannot begin to soothe, but we'll be thinking of you tomorrow.

Oh Nicki, I'm so sorry - especially after you lost Kayleigh last year. But glad that Lauren will help other Cavaliers through the Collection Scheme - my Oliver is registered for it as well. and it's something so easy to do (well, the arrangements are often far from easy!) and so consoling when we have to lose our precious dogs.

Nicki,
My heart goes out to you at the moment.....I am so very sorry, sending you love and best wishes
Mel xx

Another Cavalier lost to soon. She was indeed a beautiful girl and the loss must be heart breaking. Will hold you close in my thoughts. Nanette. xxxxx

Nicki, I am thinking of you today. This is so sad -- Lauren is such a lovely girl and I know how hard you worked to make her life as comfortable as possible. She is way to young to have had to deal with so much. You and Trevor have had a heavy burden with such difficult decisions to make with several cavaliers. This is a heart-breaking, but we all know, a courageous and compassionate decision. May she rest in peace.

You both are in my thoughts and prayers, she was so lucky to have a knowledgable and loving owner such as you! Hang in there....

I'm so sorry Nicki, this is heartbreaking, but releasing Lauren from her pain is the ultimate gift of love. My thoughts are with you.

Thank you all for your words of comfort which have really helped x

I feel overwhelmed with sadness at her loss, she was my 'heart' dog. Because she had been so poorly, she was very clingy and wanted to be with me all the time, so it's really hard as I am constantly looking for her.

Tommy is quite subdued, he's never been on his own. It's over 17 years since we only had one dog, at times we've had 7 with fosters and rehomes, so it seems terribly quiet.

It is a comfort that Lauren's passing is helping to spread the word about the Collection Scheme though, obviously this is something that is difficult to promote but is such a valuable scheme, it has already produced published studies which may help with pain management in the future for people as well as dogs.

Even if they are not scanned, they can still contribute, your own vet can collect tissue for the research for MVD and Pancreatitis & Diabetes Mellitus. It would be wonderful if something so positive could come from Lauren's passing in that so many more people might think about putting their dogs forward.

I will put up a post in the 'in memoriam ' section and close this thread.
