Hi all, I just wanted to ask if a puppy mill dog can have a "pedigree" . That is, if the person breeding them makes it seem like they are legitamate. Also, can you show such a dog in shows? Thanks.:)

In the USA, it is possible that a "puppy mill" dog could be from AKC-registered breeding stock. If so, the puppy could be registered with AKC, and as long as the puppy is intact, it could be shown at AKC conformation shows.

The words "pedigree" and "AKC-registered" really have nothing to do with the health of a puppy. As for as looking on the web for a cavalier puppy mills are easier to spot. There are big sites with staged pictures of puppy after puppy of all ages. Backyard breeder's are harder to tell, these are breeders who breed for money. You will see breeders list things like: EYE, HEART, HIP AND KNEE TESTED parents however this does not mean these tests were preformed by specialists in their field. Remember a vet is like a general practicioner not trained to him cardo, or ortho. Please hit up the Buying the Preparing for a cavalier forum.

In the UK, (and I bet in the US) cavalier's who were considered on top of the show ring where in fact very sick dogs. Google: Pedigree Dogs Exposed, Im sure its on youtube. While your on youtube search cavalier's with SM and see the pain these dogs are in. Finding a top notch breeder is the only why IF THERE IS ANY AT ALL to save this breed.

If you are looking to purchase a cavalier, focus more on the health testing. Yes puppy mill dogs have pedigrees and many are registered AKC. That is how they get people to buy. Ask the breeder what health testing has been done on parents and ask for proof.

I use Pedigree at home for my dogs and has positive impact keeping my dogs healthy. I feed them once a day so that they don't mess up with their digestive system. I appreciate nutrition, including veggies in my dog's food.
