Churchill is losing his teeth

Churchill, is 6 1/2 years old and has an enlarged heart, bad disc in his back and lately he has lost a couple of teeth. H is on
5 mg of prednisone day for is back. Today I was checking his teeth and found that one on the side was cracked and half of it looked like it was about ready to fall out. I am taking him to the vet to find out what they can do for him. I am concerned that if they have to put him under anesthesia, it could kill him because of his heart. I don't want him to be in pain. He hasn't stopped eating at all so that is good. Any response would be appreciated.

Hi Karen -- sorry to hear this about Churchill. The answer will really depend on how problematical his heart is. Is your vet aware that some cavaliers can appear to have larger hearts when they are not actually 'enlarged' in a way associated with heart disease? Does Churchill have any other signs of heart disease, and is he on medications? If he is not on meds, then probably there's no issue with anaesthesia; though your vet can clarify. If he hasn't been checked by a cardiologist, it would be well worth doing that as vets can be quite poor on diagnostics and treatment of cavalier heart disease. Even cavaliers on some meds for MVD can still be OK for anaesthesia.
