Syringomyelia in South African cavaliers is 41%

It's a depressing percentage but fits in with other worldwide research figures. :( I'm glad this work was done; the more countries surveyed, the better.

Having lived in South Africa and had a Cavalier in the 1980s, I'm not surprised. Virtually all their stock came originally from the UK and is scattered over a vast area or concentrated in clusters in the bigger cities, so the gene pool is pretty small. I also found - though hopefully this has improved - that when my Cavalier developed demodectic mange veterinary research wasn't very interested in small animal medicine. So I imagine neurologists and access to MRI scanning are few and far between.
